We encourage you to explore the monumental center of Lugo with this route that will take you through the Cathedral, the Roman Walls, the Domus Do Mitreo Museum and other emblematic places in the city.
To begin our Lugo Guided Visit we will meet at the chessboard located in the Plaza Mayor, next to the Lugo City Hall.
We will make the first stop on our route in front of the Cathedral of Santa María. Inside this important pilgrimage temple on the Jacobean Route, declared a World Heritage Site, we will appreciate the different artistic and architectural styles of the Seo: Romanesque, Baroque, Neoclassical... We will also observe the carvings that house the chapels of the Virgen de los Ojos Grandes and San Froilán, patron saints of the city.
A few meters from the Cathedral we will find the Roman Walls of Lugo. We will go through a section of this fence while we learn the history of Lucus Augusti, a settlement from the year 25 BC that gave rise to the current Lugo. On our walk through these walls we will notice the great state of conservation of the walls, whose layout is also recognized as a World Heritage Site.
We will continue our Lugo Guided Visit at the Domus Do Mitreo Museum, built on the archaeological remains of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to this unknown god. This innovative museum managed by the University of Santiago de Compostela will be the perfect opportunity to investigate Lugo's Roman past beyond its famous walls.
We will take a complete tour of the entire historic center in which we will visit the main squares of the city: Plaza de Santo Domingo, Plaza del Campo, Plaza de Campo Castelo and, finally, Plaza Mayor. After two hours, there we will end the Lugo Guided Visit.
Visit to the Domus Do Mitreo Museum: closed every Monday and some holidays. If this happens the day you do the guided tour of Lugo, we will climb the towers of the Cathedral of Santa María instead of visiting the museum. You will get spectacular views of the entire city!
