On this tour we will get to know a beautiful area of Bizkaia, but at the same time unknown. In the beautiful Karrantza Valley, visit the Pozalagua Cave, world famous for its impressive concentration of eccentric stalactites. Next stop in Balmaseda, a historic town in Bizkaia as it was a key point in the past of trade between Castile and Europe. Very well cared for medieval town, with beautiful palaces and spectacular perfectly preserved Medieval Bridge.
Continue our way to the mining area of La Arboleda to enjoy its old iron mines that have now become beautiful natural lakes. Finish the tour looking out over the Cantabrian Sea with a walk along the cliffs of Kobarón.
A really great day full of history and beauty.
On the Route of the Mining Zone we will enjoy the following places;
- Karrantza Valley: In itself this valley is a spectacle but we will make a stop at the hermitage of the Virgen de La Encina with views of the entire valley, to continue to the Pozalagua Caves. Famous throughout the world for its concentration of eccentric stalactites, so called because they do not grow towards the ground but in all directions.
- Balmaseda: Next to the Kadagua River and sandwiched between mountains, it was the first town founded in Bizkaia and due to its strategic location it played a fundamental role in trade between the plateau and the coast. All goods passed through here and through its beautiful Medieval Bridge, which today is in perfect condition.
- La Arboleda: We are heading towards the coast, but first we get to the core of the history of mining in Bizkaia. In the small town of La Arboleda we will take a walk through its natural lakes, once open-cast iron mines. We will descend to the next destination thanks to the La Reineta mining funicular.
- Cliffs of Kobarón: There is no better way to finish than by taking a beautiful walk along some cliffs enjoying the Cantabrian Sea.
