We will visit Sestao, Portugalete and Santurtzi, also going up to the mining town of La Arboleda using the La Reineta mining funicular. After seeing the Suspension Bridge of Bizkaia, we went to the beautiful Old Port of Algorta, to end the day on the cliffs of La Galea.
On the Greater Bilbao Route we will enjoy the following places:
- Sestao: The Altos Hornos settled here, one of which we can still see today, the center of all industrial activity in Bizkaia. From the La Benedicta dock we will see a beautiful view of the Hanging Bridge, next stop.
- Portugalete: stately town between Sestao and Santurtzi. We will enjoy the Suspension Bridge, a World Heritage Site since 2006. This Suspension Bridge was the first ferry bridge built in the world, being inaugurated in 1893. Since then, day and night, it has moved millions of people and thousands of vehicles from Portugalete to Las Arenas We will have the possibility to climb its upper walkway, located 60 meters above the estuary, and enjoy impressive views.
- La Arboleda: Moving a bit away from the estuary, we will approach this beautiful mountain town, the nucleus of mining activity until the middle of the 20th century, where we will enjoy its natural lakes, once iron mines. We will go down to the valley using the curious mining funicular of La Reineta.
- Santurtzi: A fishing village par excellence, already at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary. Famous for its fishing and fish distribution, it is famous for its exquisite sardines and the history of its "sardines"
- Puerto Viejo de Algorta: To pass to the right bank we will go up to the Suspension Bridge with the vehicle and we will live the experience of passing the estuary suspended by the cables of said bridge. Quite an experience! We approach the Old Port of Algorta, once fishermen's houses and today a beautiful corner with its steep fishing houses.
- Cliffs of La Galea: We finish this intense day on the spectacular cliffs of Punta Galea. From this place you can enjoy views of the mouth of the estuary to the Cantabrian Sea, of the towns we have visited and of the great Superport of Bilbao.
