Things to do Tour of the iron monuments of Almería
We will start our walking tour through the urban center of Almería at the Puerta de Purchena. From this place we will go to different parts of the city that stand out for the so-called iron architecture: a construction technique that emerged in the 19th century that was characterized by the use of materials typical of the Industrial Revolution.
Just five minutes from the Puerta de Purchena we will find the first example of this architectural current: the Central Market of Almería. In addition to its beautiful design, the food market stands out for a plaque that we will see inside. It is a tribute to Marie Curie, who visited the market in 1931. Do you know why the scientist traveled to Almería?
We will continue our walk along the Rambla de Federico García Lorca until we reach the Plaza de las Almadrabillas, where we will see the monument dedicated to the Almerian people who died in the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp during World War II. Just behind this memorial we will see the main representative work of iron architecture in Almería. This is the English Cable, an ore loading dock built by the workshop of Gustave Eiffel himself.
We will end the tour in front of the old Almería Railway Station, another marvel of iron work built during the 19th century.
