Things to do Bilbao Free Walking Tour: History, Culture & Local Life
Bilbao is a city that has changed enormously without losing its sense of identity. On this walk through Bilbao's Old Town, we'll use its streets to understand that story, from the city's origins to its industrial past, its transformation, and the Bilbao people live in today. But we don't want to simply take you from one landmark to another. We'll talk about Basque culture, identity, everyday life and the events that have shaped the city, leaving plenty of room for questions, conversation and whatever catches our attention along the way. Because that's how we think a place is best discovered: not by rushing through a checklist, but by understanding what you're looking at and talking to someone who calls it home. And since this will probably be just the beginning of your time here, we'll share our favourite ideas for where to eat, drink and explore afterwards. A walk through Bilbao, but also an introduction to the place we live. Small groups. No fixed price. You decide what the experience was worth at the end.

Tour was lacking real knowledge of Bilbao or its history. Went with high expectations and left disappointed. I‘ve done freetours in other cities before, but this was not for my liking. Was missing interesting details from history. I got more out of internet later on.

We were a small group (5 people) which I prefer. It’s easier to interact with the guide and with the other tour members. Our guide, Miguel, was fantastic right from the beginning. Generally speaking it was a good tour and a good introduction to Basque context, specially regarding the culture, but in what regards history the explanations were a bit confusing, not following a specific path but rather jumping according to the memory of the guide. Maybe some visual materials would ease the explanation and improve the quality of the tour.
The guide was very available for questions and gave a personal tone to the tour, which was good.
All in all is worth to take the tour, specially if you just arrived to Bilbao

“Absolutely Loved This Free Walking Tour!”
We joined the free walking tour in Bilbao in May, and it was an excellent experience. Our guide was incredibly friendly, polite, and genuinely passionate about the city. He gave a beautiful historical introduction that made the rest of the tour more meaningful.
Throughout the walk, he shared many useful tips about places to visit in the area, as well as recommendations for food and drinks. His English was very clear and easy to understand.

“More "(left-wing) political tour" than "old town tour"”
I did the old town tour but was not too happy. The entire tour was more about why basque is better than madrid, better than catalonia, has the best food f.e. pintxos (and not tapas (!)) and the best social security, schools, transportation system, language and even (better ?) food than san sebastian. It was an all around bashing instead of talking about history, architecture, myths, great people of this part of spain. It sadens me that even in 2025 in an european city we cannot embrace diversity. Furthermore this rises the question if the guide opened up the possibly one and only (?) thing where basque are not the best in - avoiding dogmatism. On the latter - it does not surprise me that the guide did not drop one word about ETA terrorism. It would not fit in his story, but would certainly fit in his political tour.
Next time I would choose a different guide/tour to get more facts instead of personal opinions.
That said - I am sure that the guide is just very proud about his region and its truely beautiful. I understand him being excited for tourists finding all great places in Bilbao - where there are loads!

“Really great tour!”
Very well organized tour. The guide Miguel was very knowledge and told us a lot of interesting facts and informations. The duration of the tour was perfect. The aspect I liked the most was the local and cozy vibe, with a lot of info about the habits a local culture!

“Interesting insights and tips”
Miguel offers a nice tour with lots of background Information about the basque culture and the City of Bilbao. He took the time to answer all questions and made sure to leave no one behind :)

“Guide did not show up”
We were at the meeting spot (arriaga plaza) at 17:20, but unfortunately the guide never showed up. We walked around the building a little bit to see if we missed him/her and we send a message, but without any response. At 17:50 we left again. Not sure what happened or if we were at the wrong spot...

We realy enjoyed the tour trough old town of 18th of June at 05:30pm! We do not remember the name of our guide????, but he gave us realy good inside information of Bilbao! We had a fun tour and would definetely come back! Saludos, Florina & Iris from Friesland????!

We enjoyed very much our tour in Bilbao in English thanks to our wonderful guide Miguel. After an historical introduction about the Basques people and their interesting background he showed us beautiful buildings and other intereting places with stories oseasoned with good humor.
We strongly recommend taking this tour with Miguel.

“Immergion tour Bilbao”
Onze gids -Miguel ?- kwam niet opdagen, wat we heel jammer vonden en ontgoocheld waren.
Gelukkig konden we aansluiten bij de vrouwelijke Baskische gids -(naam?)
die een andere tour deed om 10u15.
Maar met een veel te grote groep (30 personen)
Onze eerste ervaring met jullie organisatie is dus niet zo positief.
