Women in the Spanish Golden Century of literature

Surely, if we asked you to name authors from the Spanish Golden Age, several names would immediately come to mind: Garcilaso, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Góngora... And if you notice, none of them are women. Were there no female authors during the Golden Age? Did they always settle for the role of muses? On this tour, we’ll revisit history from a perspective you may not have considered before

Things to do Women in the Spanish Golden Century of literature

We begin in Jacinto Benavente Square, where we’ll provide a historical, sociological, and cultural framework for the role of women at the end of the Middle Ages. From there, we’ll continue to Santa Ana Square, mentioning renowned authors such as Calderón de la Barca and analyzing their works in search of any female presence. At Miguel de Cervantes’ last residence and the Lope de Vega House-Museum, we’ll carry out the same task to gain a broader understanding of how women were regarded in the literature of the time.

At the Convent of the Trinitarias, we’ll begin exploring the biographies of female authors, starting with Sor Marcela, a prolific writer and Lope de Vega’s favorite daughter. At the monument to María de Zayas, we’ll discuss, of course, María de Zayas and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, two extraordinarily brave women who raised their voices against the roles imposed upon them. We’ll then visit the Church of San Sebastián, the church of the Literary Quarter. Finally, we’ll arrive at the Plaza Mayor, where we’ll recount the story of María la Calderona as you’ve never heard it before—a tale that will leave you with a bittersweet impression
