Recommended route if you’ve just arrived in Madrid and want to get to know the city in depth. From its Arab foundation to the present day
This is the route we recommend if you’ve just arrived in Madrid and want to get to know the city in depth and thoroughly. We also recommend it even if you’re from Madrid or have visited several times but haven’t delved into its history.
We’ll talk about Madrid’s Arab foundation, its evolution from a small medieval town to the modern city it is today. Our focus will be on its historical, cultural, and artistic development, while also sharing anecdotes and fun facts that give the city its unique character.
We’ll start at Plaza Mayor, one of the finest examples of Madrid’s Baroque style. From there, we’ll head to Puerta Cerrada, the old entrance to the medieval town, and then to Sobrino de Botín, the oldest restaurant in the world, rich not only in history but also in charm. Nearby, you’ll find Spain’s oldest barbershop, where the various roles of a barber will surprise you. Close to it, we’ll visit the Arco de Cuchilleros, considered Madrid’s first skyscraper.
From there, we’ll walk to the Iglesia de las Carboneras, which houses a unique painting. Passing along Calle del Codo, we’ll reach Plaza de la Villa, one of Madrid’s oldest squares and the heart of its medieval history. Then, we’ll head to the Almudena viewpoint and the Royal Palace, offering an unforgettable view. We’ll cross Plaza de Oriente to the statue of Philip IV, which holds a hidden secret. Finally, we’ll conclude the tour at the Teatro Real.
