La Laguna, the capital of Tenerife, is its twin city. Would you like to get to know what has historically been the intellectual centre of the Canary Islands and the de facto capital of the archipelago until 1833?
Let's go into La Laguna, or "Aguere" to the island's aborigines! This Canarian jewel can boast the well-earned title of World Heritage of Humanity. Its streets were laid out in the shape of a checkerboard and its plans served as a pilot project for the construction of many new cities in the newly conquered American territory.
A university city with a youthful party atmosphere, there is nothing like strolling through its wide pedestrian streets, with plenty of gossip and anecdotes that will fascinate you. This enigmatic and colourful city was the capital of the island until the 19th century and as a result has an extraordinary architectural and artistic heritage.
The Plaza de la Milagrosa will welcome you, so called because this is where many plague patients were treated during the 16th century. We will explain the history behind the old Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, where a well-known pirate from the Canary Islands was buried. Around the Plaza del Adelantado stand key buildings in the history of the city.
On our tour we will stop at the Town Hall, the first seat of the Cabildo to be built. The route will be dotted with various "Casas", each one of which will reveal an interesting aspect of our culture: the Casa de los Capitanes Generales and the Casa del Corregidor, the Casa de la Alhóndiga, the Casa Museo Cayetano Gómez Felipe, the Casas Salazar, Lercaro and Montañés...
We will cross the main thoroughfares and shopping areas such as Calle Obispo Rey Redondo, La Carrera or Calle Herradores until we reach the central point of the old town, with the beautiful Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. We will also visit the Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, do you want to know what "Matriz" refers to?
We won't say goodbye without visiting the Church and Old Convent of San Agustín, the Plaza de la Junta Suprema de Canarias or the Convent of Santa Clara, the first female convent in the whole archipelago. We will also show you the Plaza del Cristo and the Municipal Market, where the most important local festivities are held every September.
Come and discover this magical city, where time seems to have stopped amidst stories of pirates, legends, gardens and palaces.
We are waiting for you!
