Evan our guide was fantastic, knowledgeable and has an energy that is contagious. If you want a different perspective of this wonderful city and of Spain, this tour is for you, even if you know nothing about the Cival War.

“Good choice to have the tour”
The interaction with the guide did not work for me. We could not ask questions during the storytelling but we had to wait till the end. Either there was a problem in refocusing or there was a speech learned by heart. On the other hand the guide was very helpful to meet me after I lost the meeting point but kept reminding... Overall the idea of a tour based on modern history of Spain is a great idea and do keep on providing it.

An excellent tour that really brings the history books to life. If you have even a passing interest in the Spanish civil war then I highly recommend this tour. Even if you're already well studied in this area you may still get some interesting perspectives and information. “Excellent tour”
The tour started with an overview of the history and events that led to the civil war, and then went on to show how that was played out in Barcelona specifically. So many parallels with what's going on in the world today.
Filipa is an incredibly knowledgeable tour guide. Her clear and informative explanations were enhanced by anecdotes from people she's spoken to about the civil war period and its aftermath (interviews for a book maybe?) and these added a personal detail to what remains a very difficult subject. Just because the war and a dictatorship has ended, there's still much to resolve and Filipa explained that too.
This is a brilliant tour and thoroughly recommended if you want to know more about the history that's shaped this amazing city.

“Enlightning and relevant”
I was lucky to have booked this tour with guide Yannis.
It was super enlightning and funny enough there’s a lot of history that is repeating its self.
Also it gives some good insight to the spanish culture today.
Highly recommended and even works better if the weather is a little grey - to really set the mood.
Yannis had great knowledge in generel so answered loads of questions. Charming and funny too.

“Disappointing”
I've done this tour now 4 times because I recommend it to everyone who visits the city and try to join them as much as possible. I always talk about this tour as a way to understand where you're standing, and realizing that Barcelona is a very special place. I find the information very accessible for folks from different backgrounds and at the same time, a very critical perspective. However, this las time I had a new guide that rushed through hundreds of years of history and focused on smaller facts without giving solid context. She didn't, for example, explain the different factions of the civil war, making people confused about whether the anarchists were just a bunch of thugs. I had done this tour so many times before and still was confused. She also made very nuanced critiques to certain groups but because she didn't explain the context first, they just caused misinterpretations (e.g., criticizing the leftists who were against women voting without explaining first that the leftists had generally been the most supportive of women's rights, thus making them sound generally conservative). Maybe Chryssa was just having a bad day but I suggest reviewing the script. I would love to keep bringing folks to see the city through this tour. I hope it gets better.

“Spot on”
This tour was excellent. A proper, serious history tour. This would not be for everyone. Unlike many of these free tours, there was no levity, frivolity or whimsy, no legends or make believe. But there was dense, serious, discussion and explanation of everything that has happened in Spanish politics for the last 100 years.
Philippa was superb - an expert historian who handled the controversial subjects with balance and objectivity.
The only area for improvement I would suggest is to develop a better sense of ‘place’. How was the Spanish Civil War special to Barcelona. There could have been greater connectivity between the streets scene and the story.
I would recommend it to anyone wanting an understanding of a complex subject.

“Really interesting Tour I would definitely recommend!”
This tour was a bit different from your regular tourist-tours and I loved it especially and learned so much! The era of the civil war and the Franco-dictatorship is such an important part of Spanish history that I really wanted to understanding coming here and Onno, our guide really made that possible. He was extremely knowledgeable and had a lot of insights about the time. He showed us little details from the war, that I would never have seen without him and gave us a really good overview of who was involved and why and what happened when. If you're at all interested in understanding a bit more about the civil war or franco and how it influences todays politics and society, definitely take this tour!

Me and my friend went on a tour with Evan. He was a fantastic guide and answered all our questions. I would recommend anyone interested in the Civil War to take this tour. He did a wonderful job of making a complicated subject very digestible. An extremely interesting and important history in a very beautiful city.

“Excellent ”
This was a fascinating tour - our brilliant guide ‘Evan’ gave us a really detailed explanation of the political and social situation in Barcelona before the outbreak of the Civil War, what happened during it and how its legacy continues even today. He willingly answered all our questions as we went along. We were a small group with a basic knowledge about the Civil War already which helped enormously. I would have no hesitation in recommending this tour to anyone with an interest in the Spanish Civil war.

That was the best guide of a free walking tour I have ever met. Her first-class knowledge about the Spanisch Civil War stems from family-inspired interested that matured during studies of political sciences in Barcelona and researching the Civil War. “Talking about hard stuff”
As a 77-year-old, I love to participate in lifelong learning activities. This focus on the Spanish revolution and Franco., was rich, informative, and engaging. The presentation by our guide, Raul was filled with detail, deep knowledge, and supporting photos and documents. We have done many tours in many parts of the world, and this was among the best. “A passionate history lesson”
This tour is perfect for people, who are interested in (recent) history. We didn't walk as much, so it is a bit more of a (highly interesting, interactive) lecture that takes place at some of the places mentioned.
It is less personal than the other tours I had and much more professional, which is neither good nor bad, it is just an observation.
The guide was very passionate about the topic and extremely well informed. She was also very considerate and friendly.
I was most impressed by her knowledge of the topic and especially the way she told us.
Highly recommended!

“Interesting and entertaining”
Don't expect destroyed buildings, bunkers or secret passages: as the guide said himself "there is not much to see". Though the civil war or the dictatorship haven't left many concrete signs behind, the guide is very successful in creating a witty and involving narration that gives you a very good and clear picture of the situation at the time; even though there might not be too much "to see",
