Discover the Cathedral of Baeza dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and get to know from the inside one of the most spectacular monuments of our destination.
Enjoy the Cathedral of Baeza and get to know the Roman and Christian ancestors of this temple. When Baeza was conquered, this cathedral was built over the mosque and it still keeps some of the nuances of that time, although the real reform was carried out in the 16th century, when this building became an example of Renaissance architecture.
Baeza's cultural heritage is almost incomparable to the rest, its Historic Centre full of squares and Renaissance buildings enchant all tourists who visit this not so small town in the province of Jaén. But, without a doubt, one of the stars of this destination is its impressive cathedral.
This building is part of the city's historic-monumental complex and we can see the great works of art that decorate it, such as the impressive Puerta del Perdón (Door of Forgiveness). A 15th-century construction in Gothic style, which contrasts with the Renaissance style of the façade. The most traditional part of the cathedral is undoubtedly the Puerta de la Luna, where the Gothic-Mudejar style opens up the interior of Baeza Cathedral.
Inside this monument, the works of the master Bartolomé stand out, the grilles and the pulpit, made of wrought iron, which is joined to the main altarpiece, also in the Baroque style. To find out more about the traditions and stories that it hides, you can visit the Cathedral Museum.
Not only can we admire the interior, the exterior of the cathedral is also impressive. The surrounding area is characterised by its three façades, decorated with Corinthian order pilasters. One of the main works not to be missed is the Nativity of the Virgin above the door. It has a total of three entrances, each one dedicated to a different style, which together form, without doubt, one of the most impressive Gothic temples in the world.
