Things to do Free Walking Tour Guadalajara
Discover the most emblematic sites in the historic center of the city and those that not even the locals know about. We visit 15 historical points and end the visit in one of the largest markets in the Americas. The visit starts at Plaza de la Liberación, the biggest open square downtown, then the city museum, the marvelous roundabout, the city hall, the other three main squares, the government palace, and the greatest murals of Clemente Orozco. And this is only the first part! Please note that even though the tour is free, your tips are highly appreciated. An average tip is 12 euros or 225 pesos per person.

“A tour in Spanish with translation into English”
We booked a tour in English. It turned out to be a tour in Spanish which the guide, Yami, translated into English
The tour was OK but the language barrier provided 2 difficulties. Firstly it was difficult to follow as the guide swapped back and forth between English and Spanish. Secondly, the tour over ran as the guide had to cover the tour in each language. We bailed out of the tour before the end, but still missed the tour that we had arranged for the afternoon.
If you’re going to offer a tour in on language, then deliver it in one language. If you’re going to offer a tour in two languages, make it clear in the marketing.

“Yami went above and beyond”
Yami led a bilingual tour in Spanish and English. She accommodated many unplanned stops, like a free visit to the Museo Regional and a wedding at the Guadalajara Cathedral. Those extra sights added an extra 2 hours to the tour, and any other guide would’ve hurried us along or ended the tour. However, Yami finished all the stops without any complaints, so we could get a complete view of Guadalajara.

Took the tour in English. It was less than 2 hours. Saw the major sights. Check. Received some good tips from Alexandra. However she gave wrong times for the free tour on Tuesdays at Cabanas and I showed up at 3:30 as she said
but the tour was in Spanish. The English tour was an hour earlier, at 2:30. I planned my whole afternoon around the 3:30 time. Wasn’t thrilled. Also the little ice cream place she recommended wasn’t that good. And La Chata was decent but everything was way too salty. I also don’t appreciate that she recommended “tip ranges”. I abhor when restaurants do it too. All in all, this tour was good enough but also a bit disappointing. Mixed bag.

Alexandra was great. Very skilled and experienced guide. She did many, many things very well.
Since I work in the tourism industry and manage tour guides I’d like to offer two very small suggestions of what I call Best Practices for tour guides.
1. Since you are not originally from Guadalajara be careful of saying “we” when referring to past accomplishments of the people of Guadalajara. I believe you said “x years ago we did such and such”. It could come off as pretentious boasting by claiming credit for what others have done.
2. Beware of asking unsafe questions. Though it’s great to engage the crowd, be careful not to embarrass them by asking questions that they probably don’t know the answer to. That’s why they are on the tour. To learn.
When you ask a specific question, which you did a few times, it might do two things. If someone happens to know the answer, it will make them feel smart, proud and great about themselves. However, at the same time, it could make the rest of us feel dumb, ashamed and embarrassed for not knowing something. We want to be attentive to only ask “safe questions” that most people know the answer to. Remember it’s risky for someone to answer a question in front of strangers. We need to protect their egos.
It works well when you lead them to an obvious answer and let them respond and leave feeling good about themselves

We had a great tour with our guide Alex! As real Tapatío, he shared a lot of information about historic sights, culture/food and things to do. Although I have been to Guadalajara various times, I still very much enjoyed the tour and would definitely recommend spending a couple hours with Alex in this walking tour.

“Kind of lazy tour. ”
Compared to any average free walking tour, this one was very low in energy, the guide Valeria seemed lazy and not that much knowledgeable. Several times she lost the thread of what was saying and to finish sentences only added "or whatever".
The content of history was also vague, just some basics of Mexico in general and few context about Guadalajara itself.

The tour was planned very well with lots of useful information and interesting facts that kept me engaged. I had a wonderful time. I loved how they recommend things to do during your stay, places to try traditional Mexican meals and little tips such as days museums have free entry. The only thing I didn't like was that the website said that the tour started at 10.30am and recommended getting there 15mins early. I arrived at 10.15am and was told it didn't start until 10.40am. I had already had coffee and breakfast so I just had to wait around until it started. I think the start time should be 10.30am as we were in the plaza for a bit discussing the buildings so if anyone was late they would have seen the yellow umbrella.

We had Valeria as our tour guide. She was lovely and well-spoken. She provided lots of historical information and was knowledgeable enough to answer most questions which were welcomed. She also answered practical questions about renting bikes and getting SIM cards. I highly recommend the tour and Valeria.

I trusted someone in the reviews saying « great introduction to the city » and it is 100% true. It helps getting direction in the city, knowing what to do and when to do it (which day this museum is free, which part of the day is better to visit this place) and the guide (Alexandra?) gave us a lot of local tips and the do’s and don’ts of the city. Great tour :)

Free or not one of the best Introductory walking towards I’ve been on. Alexandra filled us in on the highlights of the city and also additional tours we could take, places to eat and other fun things to see, etc. she was awesome!

“Guadalajara tour amidst chaos”
We booked a tour the same time as an impromptu protest. Lots of extra noise and distraction. Our guide was awesome. She provided an wonderful tour full of facts, legends and helpful tips. She improvised well and as guests got the full experience in spite of the crowds. I will book more...

Nayle nos dió excelentes explicaciones sobre la historia de Guadalajara, sobre los artistas y los temas relevantes para conocer respecto a la ciudad. Mi único comentario negativo es que no arrancó puntual el tour y esto pudo aprovecharse para entrar a otros lugares como el palacio de Gobierno.

Alexandra was our guide and was fantastic! Alexandra had so much knowledge of the history and buildings of town down Guadalajara. I learnt a lot of facts and interesting things that made me feel so much more connected to the city, including being recommended a tostada ahogada place that was one of my favorite meals of the trip! “Great walking tour”
Our group enjoyed a lot the walking tour of Guadalajara, that included all 4 squares around the cathedral, ending in front of Hospicio Cabanas, perfect ending as we were planning to see the beautiful murals by Orozco. Great info and trivia throughout the tour, we learned a lot about tapatio culture!

“Enjoyable and educational ”
The guide determines if the tour will be fun. Our guide, (he never gave us his name), knew his stuff, told funny side stories and gave us a list of restaurants to visit. Highly recommended.
