Avilés boasts a historic district that surprises every visitor. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it was granted a charter that elevated the settlement to the status of a town, and a defensive wall was built—though today it has almost entirely disappeared. On this tour, we’ll explore downtown Avilés, with its characteristic arcades, as well as the Sabugo neighborhood—the only neighborhood outside the city walls that existed in the town during the Middle Ages. We’ll explore its history, its most iconic sites and buildings, and how it has transformed over time due to its port activity and, more recently, its industrialization. The tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays include access to the Las Alas Chapel, a proto-Gothic funerary gem and an example of the splendor Avilés enjoyed in the Middle Ages.
