Our tour starts at the beautiful Plaza Porlier in Oviedo in the center of Oviedo, right next to the Plaza de Alfonso II. We will appreciate the beautiful buildings and tell you about The Palace of the Counts of Toreno, one of the main examples of baroque architecture, which currently houses the headquarters of the Royal Institute of Asturian Studies; the Palace of Camposagrado, where the Supreme Court of Asturias is currently located and the Cathedral of San Salvador which can be clearly seen from the square. We will talk about one of the curiosities of the square, the sculpture The Traveller, a man with a hat and a coat, surrounded by suitcases. Since its installation in 1993, El Viajero has become one of the most photographed places in the city.
We will go to La Plaza de la Constitución, which has served as a public square since 1505, houses the Casa Consistorial de Oviedo, as well as one of the most beautiful churches in the city, the Iglesia de San Isidoro, and many other architectural structures that we will comment on. We will tell you the different names that the square has and we will tell you the reason for these changes.
We will take you to the Convent of San Pelayo of the women of the Benedictine order, also known as the Monastery of the Pelayas. Founded by King Alfonso II of Asturias, and initially dedicated to St. John the Baptist. We will pass in front of the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias which is located in three buildings: the Palacio de Velarde, the Casa de Oviedo-Portal and the Casa de Solís-Carbajal.
