Astorga Cathedral Guided Tour

The Astorga Cathedral began to be built in the middle of the 15th century, and it is one of the most important monuments in the city. It is known that it was built on the foundations of a pre-existing Romanesque church, dating from the s. XI: It has the peculiarity that it took three centuries to finish it, well into the 18th century, which is the reason for its mixture of styles: Gothic in structure, but with a Baroque and a Renaissance façade.

Things to do Astorga Cathedral Guided Tour

At the indicated meeting point, we will begin our visit to the Cathedral of Santa María, once inside the Church, we will observe the different altarpieces that are kept in it: the main altarpiece of the apse, that of the Virgin of the Majesty, that of San Miguel ... etc. We will continue with the choir stalls, the imposing organ, the sacristy, the cloister. Once outside, we will talk about the main façade, in which we will contemplate the laborious mastery in which the different scenes that make it up are sculpted. To finish with the southern façade, of a completely different style as it was from a later era.

Can you imagine what it meant to build a cathedral for a town that had barely 500 inhabitants in the 15th century?

On one of the spiers of the apse there is a statue of Pedro Mato, a popular Astorian hero who “looks after” the city from above. Book now, our local guides in the area will tell you who it was, or why the towers on the façade are of a different color.
