After a brief introduction to the history and heritage of Besalú and la Garrotxa, we will get ready to enter the old town through its imposing medieval bridge, one of the most spectacular in Spain, from the s. XI.
We will continue through beautiful narrow and cobbled streets, with some shops and open-air markets, and we will go down to visit the Jewish Quarter of Besalú. We will find the micvé or ritual bathhouse, unique in the Iberian Peninsula, and the remains of the old Synagogue and the Jewish school.
We will continue the free tour through Besalú towards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where we will talk about the typical products of the area, such as sausage, cheese and the famous Ratafía, a sweet liqueur made with herbs. Immediately we will arrive at the Plaza de San Pedro, the heart of the town, where the Romanesque Church of the same name is located, belonging to an old Benedictine monastery.
Passing by the beautiful Church of San Vicente we will reach our final point of the route, a beautiful viewpoint where we can admire the remains of an ancient Roman settlement and magnificent views over the bridge and the town.
End of the Besalú Free tour: Carrer de Rocafort viewpoint.
