If you travel to Coimbra, don’t just visit. Connect with its soul! Join us on a free walking tour through the heart of one of Portugal’s most iconic and historic cities. Kings once ruled here, students still wear black capes, and centuries of culture echo through the cobbled streets. We begin at the statue of King Dinis, founder of the University of Coimbra, and dive into the majestic University complex, including its iconic Pátio das Escolas and the ancient Roman gateway. From there, we admire the beauty of the (New Cathedral) Sé Nova before descending into the city's older layers. We’ll explore the (Old Cathedral) Sé Velha, one of Portugal’s finest Romanesque cathedrals, and wander through Coimbra’s picturesque medieval alleys, full of hidden stories and local charm. Passing through the Gate and Tower de Almedina, we’ll make our way into the vibrant Praça do Comércio, a historic meeting point for merchants and travelers. Our journey concludes at the scenic Largo da Portagem, offering a breathtaking view over the Mondego River and the ruins of the Monastery of Santa Clara, a site deeply connected to Queen Isabel and centuries of devotion.

Excellent tour. Andre provided lots of information on the history or Coimbra, the University and the regional food and music. He discussed architectural features, student traditions and geographical features of the area. We covered a lot of ground and enjoyed the 2 hour walk thru beautiful Coimbra.

Em um tour na cidade de Leon, o guia explicou sobre os custos e sobre sua remuneração, apesar de não ser obrigatória. Acho importante p que o profissional receba uma remuneração justa pelo trabalho, mas é uma tarefa que deve ser tomada pelo guia

“A must-do tour!”
My husband, son, and I toured the University of Coimbra and the surrounding area with Leane, and she was an outstanding guide. Her knowledge of Portugal’s history was very impressive, and she shared it in a way that made everything really interesting. She pointed out so many tiny details in the monuments and statues that we would’ve otherwise completely missed. As a student at Coimbra, she also gave us a fun look at the school’s unique traditions and customs, which made the whole experience even more memorable.
Leane answered all our questions with patience and insight, and she went above and beyond by recommending great places to eat and fun things to do after the tour. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with her and would highly recommend FreeTour to anyone visiting Coimbra.

“A Great Introduction to Coimbra”
Our guide was excellent. She was pleasant, helpful and informative throughout on a really hot Coimbra afternoon. Her English is very good so there were no problems with communication. She brought her own student's cape (a unique feature of Coimbra University) for tour members to try on, which was a really nice gesture. She was particularly knowledgeable about the university and answered a lot of questions about this. On content, I am pretty sure the old Cathedral (Se Velha) is Romanesque, not Manueline as suggested. Also the Santa Cruz church/monastery would have been worth pointing out.

“Amazing tour!”
We had the luck of having tour guide Ana for our Coimbra walking tour. Ana is professional, formal, friendly and had the kindness of waiting for us, as we had problems parking. We met her at the the university campus where she is a student herself. She was able to transmit the culture, traditions and the feeling the students have studying at this amazing university. We even had the luck to witness one of the traditional celebrations (where we came to love the goat bell). She took us around the city and provided us with many stories and detailed historical information about this pretty place. We highly recommend booking a tour with this wonderful lady, you won't regret it! Thanks again dear Ana for this fabulous tour.

Leanne was a great guide, she showed us all the important sights across the city and told us interesting facts about them. Plus bonus insights into the (what seems to be an amazing) student life in Coimbra. Since we were a small group she also had time to answer all of our questions. One tip for future tours: start by sdking ask what people already know to save repitition! As we were the only members of this tour, it would have been nice if Ana had asked us what we had already seen and whether there was anything in particular we had not seen and would like included.

“Enjoable and Informative Walk In Coimbra”
Ana was an excellent tour guide. A student at the university she shared with us not only the sites and history of Coimbra but also student life and some of the traditions that are centuries old that students still carry on with today. Would recommend this tour.

Ana is a beautiful and knowledgeable young lady who is studying in Coimbra city. She gave us a great tour by describing history of landmarks, students traditions and religious practices of the city. Very informative and helpful. She even directed us to a place where to try local sweets. Great tour, thank you for sharing your experience with us!

“Excellent guide and tour!”
We found the tour to be very informative, and just the right length. It was a small group, just 4 plus the Guide, and that made it very easy to ask questions. Our guide, Lucas, was excellent - very personable, friendly and knowledgable!

“Wonderful and teaching tour in Coimbra”
The tour was really nice. Our guide Lucas was very knowledgeble in the history of Coimbra and he took us to see many interesting places in the heart of Coimbra. Lucas was also able to answer all our questions.
To summarize: the guide Lucas was very good and the tour fullfilled all our expectations..
