Things to do Coimbra Free Tour: Downtown & University
With this tour, we will explore the downtown, the University, and the Historical It is a visit to the most historic area of Coimbra. We will talk about the history, legends, society, and traditions of Coimbra and Portugal ( such as fado, gastronomy, drinks). It's a city full of history, traditions and with a funny and massive student life. This is a long tour (a little longer), where we can't avoid the climbs (be prepared to walk and climb some stairs and some slopes) . Itinerary: Largo da Portagem Downtown (Commerce Square, Monastery of Santa Cruz) Uptown (Old Cathedral, Anto Tower, Quebra Costas Square) University (exterior buildings) Botanic Garden Largo da Portagem I am a certified guide Please book the tour if there are at least 2 people! With fewer people, No-tour. Or just let me know if I have other bookings (if that's the case, I can make the tour). If you see that the cancellation rate is high on my profile, that has something to do with it. There are no one-person tours. Or people no show up. Any questions, please ask. Thank you!

The tour is 3 hours long and involves a lot of walking but certainly worth it!

My family and I really enjoyed touring with João Mendes. We were the only ones on the tour that day. My husband and I, and our 10 years old and 5 years old children. A very small tour (just me and one other) with Joao. We had a great 3 hours, walking all over the city, from the downtown, to the cathedral, to the university. I had walked some of these same streets the day before but because of Joao’s knowledge, saw much more and learned much more. Local guides like Joao are why I love a walking tour!

Freetours are very informative so I recommend everybody to take one. This one is focused a lot on historical information and has quite a formal, but warm, atmosphere. I think it can improve on group atmosphere and actuality information but overall I enjoyed. Joao has a warm and pleasant personality.

Joao was everything we had heard about him. Caring and very knowledgeable. Whilst some of the hills were challenging, it did not take away from the enjoyment of the tour as the pace was manageable with just 7 of us in the tour. So much nicer than the large walking group tours. A must do when in Coimbra.

We thought that Joao was the best tour guide of all our free walking tours. He told just right amount of information about the sights to inform but not too much detail. Some political background without being a history lecture. We were concerned about the hill to the castle, but he stopped enough times with interesting facts that you were there before you knew it. He also gave information about other places to see and places to eat. We would highly recommend Joao as a tour guide.

We just loved our tour with Joao…so much knowledge and so many stories to share…the tour went so quickly and we covered just about everything Coimbra has to offer…thanks Joao for a great day…we loved Coimbra!

“Weather made tour difficult”
I don't blame Joao for the rainy weather, but looking for places we could stand out of the rain would have made it much easier to hear what he was saying. Knowing the forecast, it would be good to think ahead of places to get out of the hard rain. I would end the tour at the University, many guests want to stay up the hill to tour inside the library, chapel and palace. I would also make it clear that going inside the University buildings is not part of the tour. Overall, the weather played into our experience but planning ahead could improve this.
