Free Tour of San Cristóbal de las Casas
The Free Walking Tour San Cristobal de las Casas is a guided walking tour, focused mainly on individual travelers (backpackers), who want to discover the city and learn more about the attractions of the place.
Things to do Free Tour of San Cristóbal de las Casas
What we would like to achieve with our tour is to stimulate the integration and contacts between visitors and locals and to preserve and promote San Cristobal de Las Casas’ customs and traditions. The whole tour will take about 3 hours and gives information about the historical places (amongst other things; Santo Domingo church, the San Cristóbal cathedral, cultural centre el Carmen, el Cerrillo, the principal market, Guadalupe church and Cerrito de San Cristóbal). The tour also provides the tasting of local products, this is included in our tour. There is the opportunity to try coffee, chocolate, sweets, soups, tamales (typical food in Chiapas) and pox (traditional drink from Chiapas). Visiting galleries is another part of the tour, for example we visit a textiles' gallery where indigenous people work. We also show you street art and tell you more about the messages behind it. During the tour we will give recommendations about where to eat, drink, buy and sleep. The complete information about all these places you can also find in our own map which you can take for free after the tour. The tour works with donations as an appreciation, we suggest 150 MXN pesos per person.

Daniel was our guide. He spoke more about the last 20-30 years than the culture and history of San Cristobal. It was fascinating. It opened our eyes to the reason things are done the way they are done in a lot of areas of Mexico. He spoke about the different indigenous communities around, the Zapotiste’s and the water issues. Very informative!
We ended the tour with a pox (pronounced posch) tasting. Fabulous!
I would say this tour is a must when visiting San Cristobal de las Casas!! Highly recommend!!

Sinceramente no me gustó nada este Tour. Parecía más bien una oferta de los comercios de la zona. Me faltó más explicación de edificios culturales. Encima no tiene nada de gratuito. El guía nos explicó que parte del dinero era para una ONG de perros abandonados. Pidió un mínimo. Pero el mismo me pareció muy elevado. He hecho muchas excursiones de este tipo y esta me decepcionó bastante.

“Nice but not very much historical information”
The guide was happy and engaged in what he was telling us. However, the information seemed quite random at times - a lot about how big companies rob the little man, and so on. Didn't feel like the typical guided tour-content. The whole tour felt more like a promotion campain for local products. I would've liked more info about the town itself and its history. The tasting of coffee and liquour was nice though.

I would consider this as the ideal way to get basic historic and cultural background and a lot of relevant info on where to go in S. Cristobal, and also in a very entertaining and engaged fashion.

El guia que nos asignaron fue terrible, no sabía nada de historia de la ciudad, ni del estado. No fue considerado con la velocidad de la caminata ya que había una persona de la tercera edad y solo bajo solicitud de los demás esperaba a reagruparnos. Las recomendaciones que daba solo fueron enfocadas a la vida nocturna, y nunca dio importancia que SanCris tiene en la historia y la actualidad de la ciudad. Recomiendo capaciten mejores a los guias, yo no recomendaria EN ABSOLUTO al nuestro.

Después de presentarnos en el lugar y hora indicado nos dijo un guía que como sólo éramos 2 españoles que no se hacía el tour en español y que si sabíamos inglés nos uniéramos al grupo inglés y si no pues nos quedábamos sin tour, como así fue. Mi opinión es totalmente desfavorable pues la excusa que nos dio el guía es que el guía español algunos domingos no se presenta. Mentiras, desorganización. Recomiendo un tour privado que nos hizo otro guía certificado, de otra agencia, Ramón, tour cultural, gastronómico, con visita a un taller de Ámbar y nos dio a probar el licor tradicional de Chiapas. Preguntar en la Agencia Chutlot por él.

“The BEST 2.5 hours”
I was uncertain if we'd like this tour, but it ended up being amazing from start to finish. I loved getting to walk around San Cristobal, see the murals, old buildings, try coffee and pox, go through the market and the food market...Laura was funny and had so much information. We ended up seeing her later and using many of her recommendations. Thanks for making our trip to San Cristobal the best!

“I’d recommend this tour with an especially good final stop!”
Laura was an excellent guide - knowledgeable, personable, funny and good at interacting with the group. There’s a stop at a coffee shop/bakery for a free drink and at the final stop you get a short guided tasting of the local spirit Pox which is a great way to end. The little map from the tour is also useful. Recommended.

Our tour guide was so lovely and enthusiastic about the information she was providing. It was really interesting to learn a little about the city and to be shown around by a local. The group size was very large though and sometimes it was tricky to get close enough to hear all of the info - maybe the group size could be capped at 10 but she still managed to give a great tour despite this.

Our guide, Erica, was fabulous. She was able to blend her knowledge of historical temporary events. She was able to give us hints on where to eat and venues for nightlife. The route that the tour takes is interesting and not that difficult. Love the fact that she took us for a few samples of coffee.

El ritmo es lento. El guía no cuenta realmente episodios históricos de la ciudad y, cuando lo hace, desde un punto de vista subjetivo. El 80% del tour son recomendaciones de restaurantes y locales que el guía suele frecuentar. Creo que en el tour se deberían contar principalmente episodios históricos y monumentos relevantes y finalizar con algunas recomendaciones. En este tour fue al revés, quizás por desconocimiento del guía. Fue decepcionante. El peor freetour al que he asistido.

Kanga was extraordinary. This was not your usual tour pointing out this building or that building. Kanga gave a wonderful background on San Cristobal de Las Casas and the state of Chiapas. This is probably the best tour I have ever taken. Highly recommended!

Thanks to our local very well speaking tour gide Anna we spent 3 hours wandering through San Christobal de las Casas and learned a lot, laughed a lot and enjoyed a lot. She knows so much and has a very pleasant way to keep you listening. Due to her enthusiasm it was one of the best experiences so far in Mexico for me.
Maybe an idee to offer another walking tour like food tour for vegans / vegetarians. Or another part of the city. Keep up the good spirit and muchos gracias !
Ps. I really liked the finish of the tour tasting Posh / Poxna and that means something because usually I don't like drinking alcohol.

“Brilliant tour”
This was by far and away the best free walking tour we did in Mexico (we did four!). Lucia is a really experienced tour guide and it showed. She gave us a brilliant tour, giving us some really useful history/context to Chiapas and San Cristobal, taking us for a pox and coffee tasting and providing some excellent food recommendations for later (including some excellent seafood tacos). The tour had real energy, a good vibe and we came away feeling like we had some good starting context for visiting the city. Very much recommend.

The constant preaching against brands like koka kola and Starbucks was a bit too much.

El tour es muy interesante, pese a que se canceló la versión en español (éramos solo 5 personas) sin ningún tema pudimos tomar el de inglés.
El contenido me pareció muy bueno, tal vez no se centra tanto en la historia de SCDLC pero sí en lo que es hoy día esta bella ciudad, dejando siempre al guiado que tome sus propias conclusiones de la situación actual de la ciudad y de Chiapas en general.

El tour en sí, estuvo muy bien y la chica lo hizo todo muy ameno. Muchas explicaciones y buenos consejos, detallles, paradas, etc.
Un Area muy mejorabe es la Organización por parte dela Empresa . De todos los free tours realizados en mas de 40 ciudades en todo el mundo, aquí es el único sitio donde los guias llegan tarde.
Eramos 28 personas y lo logico es hacer 2 grupos mas o menos de 14 , uno en español y el otro en ingles, pero no, decidieron hacer los 2 en ingles .
Para mí es una falta de respeto y denota poca organización y empatia.

Es un tour con toda la estructura que se necesita, Carlos es un apasionado de San Cristobal y conoce mucho, en el tour solo mi novia y yo hablábamos español así que Carlos decidió hacer el tour en Inglés, pudimos entender la mayoría; pero resulta decepcionante que no se junte las personas necesarias para poder hacerlo en español, tal vez más publicidad es requerida para que los mexicanos también quieran tomar estor freetours

“Pesima actitud de la guía que no aceptó darnos el tour”
Reservamos tour español, a la llegada la guía nos pidió esperar unos minutos, fueron alrededor de 15 minutos que llegará más gente pues éramos los primeros, al juntar el grupo se acercó y nos indicó que si lo queríamos tomar sería en Inglés pues solo 3 éramos de habla hispana, y que no iba a estar traduciendo. Le mostré la reservación en español y me indicó que eso no sabia que era y que nos os podía atender pued tenia que iniciar su recorrido se fue dejándonos sin tour y sin mostrar empatía.

Fuimos al tour y el guía no apareció. No es que nos equivocáramos de lugar u hora, estuvimos todos en el punto de reunión en la misma situación.

“Plantada en el punto de encuentro”
Tras estar desde las 5 menos 10 hasta las 5 y media esperando al tour, mientras se acumulaban en la plaza de encuentro los turistas que estaban esperando el tour, decidimos contratar un tour privado al no aparecer nadie en la plaza. Desde mi punto de vista me parece fatal que de cancelarse el tour no se nos informará por correo. Desde luego no volveré s contratar ninguno de vuestros tours ya que este hecho me parece de muy poca profesionalidad.
