“Wrong meeting point, lasted 1h10 instead of 2h30”
I booked an English tour but ended up in a spanish tour. Guide wanted to provide a tour in English as well but since I was the only English speaker in the group, it was very embarassing to stop him all the time for English explanations. Meeting point was wrong even though I received several confirmation emails earlier. Apparently Free walking tour didn’t update their information on their website which doesn’t surprise me since I sent them emails before but never got an answer back… the tour lasted 1h10 instead of 2h30 as described on the web site. I used free walking tour in other cities but that’s the first time for me that so many things go wrong…

1. I got two emails about meeting point before 4pm, it ends in different meetings point.
2. The tour guide is a student from college, it is her day one work, zero work and tour experience, half of what she said I cannot understand,

“Ayumi was an excellent guide”
We enjoyed our tour of Oaxaca and it was good to have a local introduce us to some of the highlights of her city on our first visit. Meeting up for the start of the tour was a bit confusing. Our instructions were to look for someone with a pink tee shirt and pink umbrella. A man standing there when we arrived asked if we were coming for a tour, but we ignored him as there was no sign of umbrella nor pink anything. Another couple arrived looking for the same tour, and were similarly confused by this man’s manner, and eventually told us he was there to meet us for the tour. His manner was a bit rude and dismissive, and blamed us for the confusion. When Ayumi showed up with pink umbrella she was delightful, and the man we first met took the Spanish speakers on a separate tour. Our first contact with that man could have ruined the experience.

“"Free" tour guide mandates minimum acceptable "tip" ”
I've done over 60 free walking tours and several paid ones. This was my 3rd Estacion tour in one week in Mexico (after CDMX and Puebla). In my experience, of all those trips, this is the first time a tour guide announced upfront that they would only accept tips above 200 pesos, because apparently that is the hourly wage in Mexico (FALSE). Looks like this is a "Oaxaca" thing, because a friend of mine experienced the same on the free architecture tour. I understand that guides need to be compensated well for the work they do, but stop calling it a "Free" tour, when it isn't. This is not fair business practice.
PS: in Europe, most cities consider 10€ per person an acceptable tip for free tours. I've paid 300 pesos (15€) for the tour in CDMX because it was excellent.

Adriatic was incredibly accommodation and knowledgable. His tour was informative and allowed us to map out the centre of Oaxaca as well as understand a broad overview of its history. He went further than expected and gave a full list of recommendations for food, tour guides and nightlife.

“Ok experience ”
I have taken many walking tours in many countries across all six continents. This is ok, no excitement, very low energy tour. There wasn't much info or usefulness. Usually these guides spend lot of energy and efforts. It said 2.5 hrs but the guide said, no it is for 1.5 hr. Other guides provide so much info, recommendations and tips for their city. It was a disappointment.

We loved our tour of the historic centre Oaxaca. Diana was very knowledgeable and friendly. We chose to do the 9 am tour which was possibly a mistake as some of the stops were closed so it was a shorter tour, so keep that in mind when choosing your time.

“Excellent tour”
This was probably the fourth or fifth walking tour I've taken of Oazaca as I've been here several times and stay for extended periods. My friend from the US was visiting, so I thought this would be a great way to introduce her to this wonderful city. This was by far the best tour I've taken of the town and I learned a lot too. It was just the right amount of time and Estaban was an excellent guide.

“Nice effort from the guide, but our group wasn't very organised”
I usually have a good time with free walking tours, but I didn't like the way our group behave. Initially we were divided in 2 groups, but then other 6 people joined in and some of them were already friends. I don't mind that, but some of them were still talking at the same time as Sofia (our guide), so I couldn't concentrate in what she was saying. Not only that, but some of the spots were near noisy people, so maybe she could be a little more flexible and talk a little bit louder. I understand it's not easy to control the group, so I blame mostly our participants for not being so respectful to the group and the guide.

El Mago was our guide. He took us to several points of interest in el Centro Histórico and gave so much detailed explanation of each place. He also played music while we walked, which I thought was a nice touch to make the experience immersive.
It's easy to walk around and say that's a cool building and take a picture on go on your way. But when you hear the history of the building and how it came to be and how made it happen, then you see the building differently and with much more interest and respect.
At the end of the tour El Mago recommended several places to go visit, eat and drink at. He even told us where one of the Nacho Libre scenes was filmed, so of course we had to go check it out!
