Join a unique journey on Trieste’s vintage tram, the only one in Europe that climbs a slope! Discover its history, enjoy local stories, and soak in the nostalgic charm as we ride from the city center to Opicina. Don’t miss it!
Things to do Step Back in Time on Trieste’s Retro Tram
The tram has been in operation since 1902. It is extraordinary because it is the only tram in Europe that climbs an 800-meter slope with an inclination of up to 26%. The slope is so steep that the tramcar needs to be pushed uphill and downhill by a cable, making it a hybrid between a tram and a funicular railway.
On our journey, while sitting on wooden benches, you will hear the story of the tram, listen to a song about it, and travel back in time to the Habsburg Empire. You will discover fascinating stories about famous people who used the tram, including a tram driver who met his wife at the tram station—this year, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the tram! I will also share the heartwarming story of a letter to Santa Claus written by a boy from Trieste, asking for the tram to be repaired.
A lot of fun awaits you! You will enjoy breathtaking views of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea from above. You can get off at Obelisk and take a scenic walk along Napoleon’s Road to the village of Prosecco.
At the end of the trip, at the Opicina terminus, you can relax with a coffee and taste traditional pastries at a local café before returning to Trieste
