Discover Madeira’s rich history and legends on a golden-hour Funchal old town walking tour. End with an authentic local poncha at the best sunset spot in town!
As the sun dips toward the Atlantic, join me to explore Maderia's lesser-known mythology, it's better-known past, and remarkable geography as we wander through the main sights before arriving at a locals' favourite overlooking the ocean, just as the sky turns gold.
You'll hear how Madeira was born from a volcanic hotspot six million years ago, and why the ancient Greeks believed it was the location of heaven itself. You'll learn how sugar and wine built this city, how a young sugar trader named Christopher Columbus once lived just off this coast, and how a run-down fishermen's quarter turned into an open-air art gallery.
We'll finish at the water's edge as the sun goes down, thinking of the depths that surround us, with the option to try a Maderian poncha (€4).

“Lesser known curiosities about Madeira”
Relaxed and easy walking tour through the center of Funchal in the evening. We learned more about how Madeira was discovered and various lesser know curiosities about the ocean around the island, life before humans settled here and more. Leila is a lively and informative guide.
