Funchal is the Capital of Madeira Island, the first Portuguese settlement overseas in the 15th Century. Soon, Funchal became a very important port in the Atlantic, as many ships stopped here to get supplies. Madeira supplied sugar to Europe in the 15th and 16th Centuries. The sugar trade brought wealth to the Island, which attracted many foreigners. Due to a sugar trade, Christopher Colombus was in Madeira for the first time in 1478. He then lived on the Archipelago, where he married a local lady. With the decline of the sugar trade in Madeira, the Wine industry took over. The fortified Madeira Wine is known worldwide, and according to Thomas Jefferson, it is the wine of every civilized man! Want to know more? “First class tour”
Lisa was an excellent guide who was extremely knowledgeable about the island, it's history and culture. She was able to answer all questions the group members had. She also gave us useful recommendations for cafes, shopping and restaurants. Equally useful were tips about avoiding certain 'tourist traps.' I've already visited some of her suggestions and they were extremely good. Would highly recommend this tour.

“Walking tour Old Funchal Lisa”
An excellent tour, highly recommend. Lisa was extremely knowledgeable gained as a native of Madeira. We also learnt historical information, anecdotes and tips some of which you’re unlikely to read in a tourist guide. We also visited interesting traditional areas we probably wouldn’t have found on our own. Lisa conducted the tour very professionally with a backdrop of a busy Carnival event to contend. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed and very happy to recommend.

“Great Tour with Lisa”
Lisa gave us an excellent tour for 2,5 hours through the citycenter of Funchal and showed also less touristic attractions like the English church. She made the small group of 10 people to feel very welcome and encouraged us to interact. Thanks a lot for this great tour!

The 2.5 hours tour was packed with the fascinating history of Madeira and Funchal. Lisa was a wonderful guide with a wealth of knowledge, interestingly presented. We learned a lot and visited places, normally you will not see. Highly recommend this tour with Lisa.

Lisa was a great guide. Her knowledge of Funchal and the history of Madeira was amazing. It was informative and knowledgeable. She gave us time to stop and rest at short intervals and offered additional information on shops and the local areas. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and now know much more about the island.

“An interesting, if a little strenuous tour ”
A very comprehensive talk on the subject. Our tour was rather longer than 2½ hours, possibly because a couple of us were slow walkers. It could be so much less arduous if the climb to the top was done at the beginning of the tour when we are all fresh. The 10 minutes stop would have to been better to be 30 minutes at a place where one could sit down and rest and have a drink.

“Not a city visit, but a comercial tour ”
It is not a city sightseeing but a comercial tour for Madeira wine. In the first hour 40 min was around the wine and we visited a shop to shop. So I left this after an hour tó explore the real city.

“Good overview of Funchal and Madiera’s history”
Very glad we did this. Lisa was knowledgeable, a native of the island, and spoke excellent English. Also provided useful tips on where to get (and not get) local products (Madeira wine tasting, chocolate, etc.) Group was not too large (about 15) and it was fun to chat with others from around the world.

Our guide's English was very good and the first part about the history of the city was informative and interesting. Unfortunately, the second part felt like a promo tour of local businesses and the old town was not part of the tour. More sights and content should be included in the tour.
