Things to do Local Guide Perspective on Communist History
Walk with me to learn about the dark years of Communism in Hungary. Have an insider to show you the secrets of the Reds in Budapest. Learn about the brave revolutionists and the martyrs of 1956, and the hard years of dictatorship. Discover the secret police activities and a secret bunker. I am going to share my grandmother's stories, who lived through a century, and you can learn what it was like to go to a communist school. The tour includes visiting the Soviet Memorial, the Retro Experience Museum, the Liberty Square monuments, the TV HQ, the communist Bunker, the 56 Memorial Exhibit. Tour route is from St Stephen Basilica to Parliament so you will have the chance to visit the most beautiful attractions as well.

Brigitt gave a wonderful walking tour of life in Hungary doing the Soviet years, both a political history and day to day impacts on people’s daily lives. She personalized her family’s living experiences as well. Most interesting was the underground bunker in downtown Budapest

“Most interesting tour”
I reccommend this tour because the topic is interesting and not so common, it shows Hungary and Budapest under the point of view of the communist period with references to the present situation, so it allows to understand better the country and its culture. Our guide was very friendly and with a lot of experiences and stories to share.

“Facinating tour is more relevant today than ever”
The past is a different country, and this is very much true as present day Hungary is a very different place culturally, politically and economically to that of communist times. The tour was a very valuable retrospective on life under the petty tyranny in insular Hungary, a shadow of it's imperialist self, it evoked how paranoid the politicans were, and how life for the ordinary worker was ironically more difficult for the people in this 'workers paradise'. I had to deduce one point because I did not get the answer to a question that I asked, however it was a very good tour.

This was an very interesting guided walk through parts of Budapest we would not ordinarily see. Our guide was friendly and full of knowledge and experiences from the days of communist rule .
We were able to book online easily and only one day ahead.

“Now I can imagine a bit more how communism was like ”
Very illustrative tour! I loved how she incorporated cultural aspects and familial history into historical events and circumstances. She also connected the past events to the current political situation. I felt like the guide really loved sharing this knowledge which made it very enjoyable, and also questions were answered insightfully. It was super hot but she incorporated spots where we could fill up our water bottles, refresh ourselves or be in an air-conditioned place. We often had the opportunity to sit down during the stops. I think if you want to learn more about communism this is a great tour! She also gives tips on books and other places you can visit to learn about Hungary's communists past.

“See the History of Communism in Hungary with One Who Lived It”
Brigitta gave a very enjoyable and informative tour. She shared personal and family stories of the time and provided perspective to the things we remembered from the news in the late 80's. If we get to Budapest again, we'll repeat this tour!
