Discover the authentic Lisbon in Alfama, the most traditional and genuine Portuguese neighbourhood. Alfama´s streets are invaded by the sound of Fado music, vibrant colours, pots of flowers on every corner and much more.
The Alfama Free Walking Tour can be described as a stroll through the culture of Portuguese society. Alfama was one of the districts that best survived the earthquake of 1755 and today still preserves its narrow streets, enchanting hidden corners, delightfully decorated facades and is full of thousands of colourful flowers all of which our English speaking guide will show us.
Fado music is traditionally from Portugal and its gentle melody will accompany us on this journey back in time. Alfama is testimony to the Jewish, Christian and Muslim presence, all of which have left their mark here with Roman ruins, towers built by the Visigoths, castles and walls.
We will stop to contemplate the Sé Cathedral, one of the symbols of the Christian Reconquest. Santa Lucia and Portas do Sol are Lisbon´s best viewpoints. Sunset views from here are a must and the most incredible panoramic photos have been captured from these points; moments which will undoubtedly stay with you forever.
Our journey will continue through the picturesque district in search of the Stairs of San Cristobal, the heart of Lisbon life in the Figueria
Square and many more surprises.
The Alfama Free Walking Tour is the perfect tour if what you are looking for is a visit to a different sort of European city. Alfama, once a rich neighbourhood has become an area of fishermen and workers. After having survived the earthquake, it has managed to preserve its Portuguese identity.
