Discover the historic charm of one of Bavaria’s oldest towns. This tour explores Roman roots, medieval trade, and the cultural crossroads of Germany, Austria, and Italy. See majestic landmarks and fairy-tale castles through local eyes.
Join me for a guided walking tour through Füssen, one of Bavaria’s oldest and most picturesque towns, beautifully located at the edge of the Alps. Known as the gateway to the famous royal castles, Füssen has a rich history shaped by Roman roads, medieval trade, and Alpine culture.
During the tour, we explore the historic Old Town, with its colorful houses, narrow streets, and lively squares. You will learn about Füssen’s Roman origins as a strategic crossing point on the Via Claudia Augusta, its development as an important medieval trading town, and its golden age as a center of lute and violin making in the 16th and 17th centuries.
We will also discuss Füssen’s close connection to the Benedictine monastery of St. Mang, which played a key role in the religious, cultural, and economic life of the town. Along the way, you’ll hear stories about local traditions, everyday life in the Alps, and the town’s relationship with nearby castles such as Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.
