Freiburg Walking Tour: History & Regional Geology
Embark on this tour that will be about the history of Freiburg, its transition to the bicycle city we know today, and its regional geology. The tour starts at the city theater and ends at the Kanonenplatz.
Things to do Freiburg Walking Tour: History & Regional Geology
From the meeting point, we will head towards the old town of Freiburg and discover its streets, most significant historical buildings, the Bächle (the iconic water canals), the two gate towers, and the Freiburger Minster. Throughout our tour, I will tell you about the most interesting and important historical events, the town’s transition to the bicycle city we find today, and the regional geology by having a closer look at the building stones of the Minster and paved streets. The tour ends at the Swabian tower. For those who are still motivated, however, add 30 min to the tour, and we will go up to the Kanonenplatz. There you will get an understanding of the earth’s processes in the region that shaped the landscape we find today. If you like the sound of that, I am more than happy to welcome you on this walking tour. See you then! With all the little details that he uncovered for us, now living in Freiburg will be a little bit more interesting. We also really enjoyed the geological part of the tour, very interesting; I think is key to understand the city's soul. It was a real shame that we could not join the time extra.

“Brilliant guide and walking tour”
We were four canadian friends looking to.learn a little more about the wonderful city of freiburg. Our guide was a french geology student who was both very knowledgeable and entertaining. After the tour was done he offer to extend the tour 10-15 minutes to take several of us of the hillside to share some insight into the geology of the region...fascinating. worth a healthy tip and we highly recommend any tour with him. 4 happy canadians

“An interesting perspective of Freiburg”
We really enjoyed Thibault’s tour, one can see he’s really passionate about geology and he succeeded in mixing his knowledge about this field with Freiburg’s history. We usually take a free walking tour wherever we go and this one is definitely in the top 3. I like to go on walking tours in every city I visit, and this one rated among the best! Thibault was personable and willing to tackle any question thrown at him while providing a vast array of information about the city's history, architecture, structure, unique features, and more. His geological knowledge highlighted not only the natural world but also Freiburg's relationship regionally and the impact of geology on many aspects of the city, such as architecture.

Although we had already strolled through the Altstadt before, Thibault showed us lots of new places accompanied with a lot of information about the history and geology of Freiburg. The group was quite small (only 6pax) and the walk very enjoyable.

Nous avons adoré la visite. Le circuit est bien pensé, les informations bien choisies (cerise sur le gâteau, nous avons beaucoup appris sur la formation géologique de la région et la nature des pierres utilisées pour les différents bâtiments de la ville). Des illustrations nous ont permis de comprendre l'évolution de la ville, des petites devinettes ont rendu la visite plus interactive et ludique. N'hésitez pas à y aller avec vos enfants aussi!

Eine außergewöhnliche Stadtführung von einem sehr netten und entspannten Guide.
Wir haben tolle Spots besucht die wir sonst sicher nicht auf dem Schirm gehabt hätten. Außerdem haben wir viel Hintergrundwissen zur Geologischen Lage und Vielfalt bekommen die man so sicher bei keiner Stadtführung bekommt. Unser Guide hat außerdem immer wieder Anschauungsmaterial ausgepackt was die ganze Führung nochmal interessanter gemacht hat. “Great tour with lots of interesting information”
We really enjoyed the tour. Thibault is very knowledgeable about the city history and during the tour we visited all the landmarks of Freiburg with plenty of details and curiosities. His English is excellent and he is very friendly. Here and there he also added interesting information about the geology of the area, such as why are the rocks of the Munster red, and he pointed to us where a large vulcano used to be just a few kilometers away from the town. This definitely made for a memorable walking tour, absolutely recommended.

“The best tour for everybody who wants to get to know the city ”
We had an amazing tour with Thibault! He showed us the most interesting and important places in Freiburg and tell us a lot about the history of the city. You can tell that Thibault is really passionate about the topic, especially when it comes to the geology aspects of town history. He is a very nice, fun guide and was well organized and showed us a lot of old pictures and minerals from the countryside. That loosen up the tour and create a nice and fun atmosphere and of course some interesting content. The highlight of the tour was a little hike to the Schlossberg, a little mountain behind the city center, there we had a great view over the town and get to know how it was create. The three hours of the tour flew by and after that we know the city very well. Thibault was very delighted when we asked questions and always had a good answer. We highly recommend the tour for anyone who really wants to get to know Freiburg, its history and of course: the rocks!
