Early in the morning, our comfortable bus will pick us up to start the excursion that will take us to this legendary archaeological site located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Delphi, the center or navel of the ancient world , consulted by kings and pilgrims alike.
The landscape begins to transform from arid to an imposing green, passing through the tragic area of Thebes, to the slopes of Mount Parnassus, after Arachova. Under two gigantic rocks, the Fedriades, and on an impressive cliff, this famous oracle was founded in ancient times in honor of Apollo, god of harmony, of music and guardian of the sacred laws of Zeus.
For the ancients, Delphi was the center of the world, the "navel" of the Earth. From its beginnings, the Oracle acquired great influence throughout the world. The predictions of Pythius and the priestess of Apollo greatly influenced individual decision-making and, at times, had a great impact on the history of ancient cities and states. The god spoke through her in an incomprehensible language that the priestesses heard and interpreted.
We will walk the Via Sacra that went up to the Temple of Apollo and was decorated with innumerable offerings made by Greek and foreign cities. We will also visit the Treasury of the Athenians, one of the most important buildings found on the Via Sacra.
We will also visit the museum, one of the most important in Greece, which houses finds found in the region such as the "omphalos" or navel of the world belonging to the Roman period, parts of a frieze with scenes that highlight the exploits of Hercules and the impressive " bronze charioteer ", a masterpiece of Greek sculpture that still continues to impress the visitor today. After the visit we will return to Athens in the afternoon.
