I
Giovanni Baccara gave us an excellent—and very entertaining—introduction to Trieste this morning.
Rather than simply marching us from monument to monument and reciting dates, Giovanni gave us a wonderfully varied look at the city—its complicated history, literature, economy, architecture, and the remarkable mixture of cultures that has shaped Trieste. He has a particularly good way of explaining how the city’s past continues to influence what you see around you today.
One of the highlights was Giovanni’s use of old photographs. He would pull out photographs showing what a particular street, building, or neighborhood looked like in the past and then stand there with us looking at the same place today. It made the history unusually tangible. We weren't just hearing about old Trieste—we could actually see it.
Giovanni also clearly enjoys the quirky details of his city as much as the grand history. At one point he demonstrated how to operate one of Trieste's old water dragons, turning what could have been an obscure bit of street furniture into a memorable lesson.
But the undisputed mechanical star of the morning was the shutter hook. Giovanni explained—and demonstrated—with considerable amusement how its two configurations are, shall we say, anatomically suggestive: male when erect and female when reversed. It is difficult to look at a nineteenth-century shutter hook quite the same way after that.
That combination is what makes Giovanni such a good guide. He has the historical knowledge, but he doesn't take himself—or Trieste's history—so seriously that he misses the fun. He brings the city to life through stories, photographs, architecture, local customs, and the little details that most visitors would simply walk past.
If you are visiting Trieste and want more than a standard checklist of sights, I would highly recommend taking a free tour with Giovanni. You will come away understanding much more about why Trieste is such an unusual city—and you may even learn something about plumbing and window hardware that you never expected to know.

“Fantastic way to discover Trieste⁹”
This tour was full of fascinating historical details, fun facts, and useful recommendations. Giovanni is a professional, approachable, and very friendly guide. We did the tour in the summer heat, but Giovanni had thoughtfully planned the stops to keep us in the shade as much as possible, including stops at historic drinking fountains where we could refresh ourselves.
All in all, it was a great experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Trieste.

What a fantastic 2-hour city tour! Our guide led us with wit and charm through Trieste – a really great round, perfectly tailored to the city's highlights. The red thread was brilliant: We started with recent history, anecdotes from the 20th century, the harbor as the beating heart of modernity, and traces of the Habsburgs. From there, we went further back in time – through baroque splendor, Venetian influences, all the way to Roman antiquity with the roman Arc. At the end we got the Direction for the Roman Theatre and Tipps for Food and a lot more.
The humor kept things lively: Laughs at every era, never boring. Perfect for anyone who wants to not just see Trieste, but feel it. Great value for "Tip"money, highly recommended!

Really enjoyed our 90 minutes with Giovanni. He did a terrific job explaining the horribly complicated history of Trieste in the 20th century, and the various changes to national boundaries up to the present day. He showed us the different areas of Trieste, included a cake-tasting outside a beautiful cafe, and gave useful recommendations about things to see and places to eat. Altogether an excellent tour from a most engaging and knowledgeable young man. Thoroughly recommend!

“Bring Cash for Tips and Don't be Cheap”
Excellent guide. We paid for a guide through Viator in Ljubljana just a couple of days ago and this "free" one with Giovanni was at least twice as good. The guide was knowledgeable and read his audience well. Plenty of historical background to put the city's past and present in context with some lighthearted stuff thrown in. My big beef - why don't you organisers tell people to bring cash if your guides don't have a card reader? We brought cash but at least two couples didn't. Also- the guide was very polite but I think should be clear that he is paid by tips. Some people are so cheap. Anyway we recommend this tour. Bring cash.

Giovanni was sn engagjng guide with a dry sense of humour. We covered many of the history and landmarks of Trieste though I perhaps wanted a little more - only 90 mins but maybe an extra hour was needed. There was less interaction with the group than Ive had on other walking tours, maybe because most of the group members were quiet and didnt ask questions

“Excellent tour by knowledgable guide”
Giovanni was an excellent host for this tour. He was able to answer all questions put to him and had a great depth of knowledge about his home city. Being from Ireland, I would have liked some background about James Joyce's connection to Trieste, but one can't fit in everything. The historical, cultural, political and even meteorological contexts were all fascinating.

“Very Nice guide, beautiful city and interenting information”
Our guide was named Orsolya, she is a nice hungarian girl with a good level of english and lot of information about the city of Trieste. The tour is complete and the explanations very clear! Highly reccommendable

“Excellent tour of Trieste ”
Giovanni gave us a very interesting account of the history of Trieste - very complicated, but important to know. He showed us round all the important spots in Trieste, organised a tasting of a local specialty and gave lots of tips on what to see to make the best of our time in the city.
