The breathtaking view from Lekuresi Castle
Our guided tour in Saranda starts from the Lekuresi Castle. Located on a hill overlooking the city, Lekuresi Castle can be reached in 10 minutes by car from the port. Its construction dates back to the mid-sixteenth century A.D. by the Ottoman pasha Suleiman I called the Magnificent. The castle has a square shape, with two large bastions that characterize its profile at the corners of the northeast and southwest. Beyond the appreciable architecture, climbing up here is well worth it for the incredible view offered. Lekuresi Castle is like a huge panoramic terrace placed in a truly strategic position. From here the view dominates the whole city, to the south Ksamil and Corfu, to the north the lagoon of Butrint.
The charm of the Saranda Synagogue and the Archaeological Museum
Since 1983, archaeological excavations have brought to light the second stage of our tour, the remains of the ancient synagogue of Saranda, which dates back to the 5th-6th century AD. The synagogue of Saranda has gone through several phases of use, including the conversion to the Orthodox church in its last phase. Among the most important finds that took place in the area are two mosaic decorated floors. The first represents symbols of the Jewish holidays: a seven-branched candelabrum, a cedar and a ram's horn. The second includes varieties of animals, trees, a temple and symbols that allude to biblical tradition. You will learn more by visiting the Museum of Archeology.
