The longest-running and most successful free tour in Riga takes you to the Central Market, the Moscow District, and City Centre. This is NOT an Old Town tour, we believe it's important that travelers see different parts of the city, rather than getting stuck in Disneyland. Come and join, and explore the Real Riga! This is perfect for people who may have already visited the Old City and want to see a bit more of Riga. Riga Free Tour operates for tips only. So if you like the tour and think we should keep doing it, you can give your part to support the cause. If you are a large group, please understand that most visitors to the tour are individuals or small groups. Get in touch and let us know about your group. “Nice to see something new!! ”
This was our second tour in Riga and we were pleased to have Richard as our guide again.
Again, he shared his knowledge, passion and humor with us, with his super relaxed attitude that makes everybody feel comfortable. The tour consists of two parts, with the first the central market (going in and around all the buildings) and the second the area behind the market (duck church, Latvian Academy of Sciences, ghetto, train station). You really see so much more of the real Riga! We also followed his tips to take tram 7 till the end, and to buy food at the market (after the tour ended, we went back and had the best, most diverse and cheapest lunch in Riga).

I recommend this tour with Mareks - he walks very quickly and speaks in the same way, but it is very interesting. I would add more buildings and atmosphere of area called Moscow District, f.e. Latgales iela. The tour could start at the Central Market nnd maybe return by trolleybus...?

Very clear speaking Caspar, gave us a lot of information???? walking was quiet quick, should have liked te stand a bit longer in interesting place( jewish memorial place). T was very pity the market was closed, hé gave us super interesting details about the building, were it came from and how it came to Latvia????????the market outside was good, and worth visiting????
The Russian quarter very interesting to the different architecture he showed us.
Caspar is a good guide with a lot of history knowledge…. Spears very clear language????????

“Great Tour”
Today I had the Riga Market and Moscow District Tour with the guide Sofia. She is a great guide and you felt that she had fun showing her beautiful city to visitors and answering our (lots of) questions. She gave us a short but informative wrap-up about Latvian history and wherever we wanted more Information she was ready to tell give us more. The places she showed us during the 2,5 hours of walking were interesting (some also beautiful) and and even more interesting were the stories linked to these places. Also she gave us some good information about Latvian culture and really good food recomendations.
So if you want to see more of Riga than the old town, this is a clear recomendation.

“Excellent Tour”
We did the markets and Moscow tour with Jasper today & it was superb. Just the right amount of information to really bring Riga alive delivered with humour and a thorough understanding of the history and politics of the city. Couldn’t recommend highly enough. We only have a couple of days here- now wish it was more - but the tour has been invaluable to our understanding. And added bonus of a great lunch recommendation.

“Seeing a different side of Riga”
Richard was an excellent guide. He set the stage for what we saw with history, geography, economics, architecture, and a healthy dose of humor. He addressed the good and the bad of the Soviet occupations and the Latvian people. He answered questions patiently and never seemed affected by the cold or rain. It was a very enjoyable 2.5 hours and I recommend it.

we did the central market/alternative tour. Got a quick tour and history lesson of the central market and then walked over towards the Moscow. Part of town with the wood buildings and burned synagogue. Great tour good history lesson and awesome guide would do it again.

“Difficult circumstances ”
The guide was very enthusiastic but a bit unrealistic in the absolutely atrocious weather conditions. We had to drop out mid way through as he was simply walking too fast on very uneven, slippery ground. It was the day when several days rain fell in about 30 minutes right in the middle of his tour. He entertained us well while we were sheltering but as soon as the rain eased raced off at a very rapid pace, presumably to make up lost time.
A shame because the other Freetours we had done had been at a more comfortable speed for the underfoot conditions. Riga has a lot of cobblestones.

This was our first walking tour as things like this don't usually appeal to us and we tend to do things ourselves but the reviews were very good and took the plunge.
We were not disappointed. James, our guide, made everyone feel welcome, was warm and funny and had good subject knowledge. At no point were we bored and we got to learn some history of Riga and the Latvian people. Thank you James!

This tour stepped out of the old town and went into the surrounding city, with a visit to the central market and stops in the Moscow district, and the ghetto.
