“Good informative walking tour of Hanoi”
Nam was very knowledgeable and clearly very passionate about Hanoi history! He brought us through the French Quarters and explained each landmark in great detail, and we even stopped by for a coffee break. We then walked towards the Old Quarter, where we stopped by various other sites and further learnt about the historical and cultural significance behind them. Finally, the tour concluded with a sobering tour around the Hoa Lo Prison, and we saw how these same grounds once contained within them both Vietnamese political prisoners under the French rule, and afterwards prisoners of war during the Vietnam war. Throughout the tour, we were well-engaged and Nam answered all our questions!

Lisa was a really good guide. There are not many french quarter tours, and I was delighted by the rich history Lisa shared. “Discovering Hanoi Beyond”
We had a great experience on the Hanoi Free French Quarter Walking Tour. It ended up being just the two of us and the guide, so it felt like a private tour. Our guide was a friendly local who clearly knew the area well and shared lots of interesting insights—not just the typical tourist facts, but also personal stories and local context that made the walk really engaging.
What we appreciated most was that we didn’t just stick to the main streets; we explored quiet alleys and lesser-known corners of the French Quarter that we would never have found on our own. The guide also gave us some excellent tips for local food spots and things to do after the tour.
At first, it was a bit challenging to understand the guide’s English, but as the tour went on, communication became much easier and we really enjoyed the conversation.
Overall, it was a relaxed, authentic, and enriching experience. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to go beyond the surface and see a different side of Hanoi!

“A comprehensive tour of Hanoi”
I travel widely, and I’ve done dozens of free tours; this is one of the best ever. With only two people on the tour, our guide could’ve easily canceled. Instead, she spent nearly 4 hours taking us through the nooks and crannies of old Hanoi. Julia took us to hidden coffee shops, old bookshops, temples, etc Julia was an incredible guide: energetic and very knowledgeable about the city. I give this tour the highest possible recommendation.

“Fantastic guide, fantastic tour”
This tour was thoughtfully organised with Lisa taking us on a journey through the history of Vietnam and its French colonial period in particular. Lisa was extremely knowledgeable and shared fun facts that helps us understand better how historic events shaped Vietnamese life and culture. The walk was also quite pleasant through the green and beautiful French quarter. We also visited the prison which was fun and informative.

“I was so fortunate to have Julia as a guide!”
I was interested in learning the history of Hanoi in order to understand the modern city and its people today. I got this knowledge and so much more with my guide/new friend Julia. I was the only tour participant which allowed Julia and I to get deeper into the area history & culture as well as discuss (over tea & a snack :)) modern Vietnam and society. We spent hours talking and Julia was so generous with information and insights AND amazing restaurant recs! I'd certainly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Vietnam.

“Fun and informative tour of a lovely area of Hanoi with Vân”

“Must have experience in Hanoi!!!”
Wonderful tour with Van, our visit to the French Quarter definitely the highlight of our trip to Hanoi. Wide, less crowded streets, fantastic architecture all explained in knowledgeable detail by our personable guide. Topped off by an eye opening visit to the Hoa Lo Prison to better understand the struggles against the French occupation and Vietnam war. Not to be missed!

“This trip was the best way to end our week in Hanoi”
I do however wish I would have done it at the beginning. Our tour guide, Nam Tran was the absolute best. If I could give out more than 5 stars I would. As a history teacher myself, Nam taught us so much more about the culture and history that you would miss by just reading the information. Nam had a plethora of knowledge and experience that he shared the entire walk. If you are wanting to learn about the culture and history of Vietnam, experience some hidden local secrets, and explore the beauty of Hanoi, then you need to book this trip ASAP. Wir hatten eine sehr informative und kurzweilige Tour mit Lisa, die wir nur empfehlen können! Lisa ist ein fantastischer Guide mit ganz viel Hintergrundwissen. Wir haben nicht nur sehr viel Wissenswertes über die Geschichte Vietnams und der Menschen mitgenommen, sondern hatten auch sehr viel Spaß. Lisa hat uns Plätze gezeigt, die wir ohne sie niemals entdeckt hätten. Zeit für Fotos und Restaurant-Tipps hat sie sich auch noch genommen. “Amazing historical tour with hidden gems! ”
We just had the most amazing tour with Vân! She was so knowledgeable, funny and chatty. It felt like walking around Hanoi with a friend, we saw so many places we would have walked straight past and learnt so many details we never would have known. It was a great way to explore this part of the city and Vân made the tour so special. The tour of Hoa Lo prison was harrowing and Vân really highlighted the history and conditions the prisoners would have lived through. We really recommend going on a walking tour with this company!

“The other side of Hanoi”
This tour was absolutely amazing! For us meant a second chance of Hanoi because we arrived from some small towns in the south of Vietnam and we found Hanoi a bit noisy (common in big cities as this one). This tour gave us a different view of the city, it’s full of historic content, local costumes and everything related by a great local tour guid, Lisa, who speaks English fluently and has a beautiful energy and passion for what she does.

“Hoa Lo Prison and Little Paris Free Tour in Hanoi”
We really enjoyed the tour with Vân.
We visited the french quarter, where we learned a lot about the colonies. In addition Vân showed us some hidden places, which were really beautiful.
Vân also guided us through the Hoa Lo prison. She knew a lot and answered all our questions.
It was a really special tour, since we were just a group of 3 people.
Vân is such a friendly, well informed guide.

“Amazing”
Today is only me on this tour. But the time i spend with Lisa was amazing. The tour is really fun, energetic and of course very informative. I highly suggest anyone who want to have a deeper understanding of France influence on Hanoi. “Fantastic Tour”
My husband and I have really enjoyed our tour today with Julia learning about the French Quarter and Hoa Lo Prison. She was so interesting to listen to as well as being a very friendly and kind person. We learnt so much today about the past French colonial rule, and the influence on Hanoi architecture and cuisine.She explained so much about Vietnam culture and history but in a very easy to understand and entertaining way. Along the way we were able to sample delicious ice cream and coffee (in a great coffee shop that we would never have discovered on our own). The tour through the prison was also done sensitively with excellent insights from a Vietnamese perspective. We loved visiting the little bookshop. Thank you Julia - you are an amazing guide!
