Things to do Guided Tour of Guimaraes - The Cradle of Portugal
On this free guided tour of Guimarães, we will visit the main points of the historic center of this medieval city, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and known as the birthplace of Portugal. The starting point will be outside the walls, next to the emblematic Alfândega Tower, where you can read "Aqui Nasceu Portugal" - a phrase that sums up the historical importance of this place. From there, we begin our walk through the old town, exploring its cobbled streets, picturesque squares, and the buildings that witnessed the birth of the country. Along the way, we pass places like Praça de Santiago, Largo da Oliveira, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, and Rua de Santa Maria, immersing ourselves in the stories and legends hidden there. At a relaxed pace, we'll get to know every nook and cranny, stopping to appreciate the old façades, sculptures, iron balconies, and centuries-old tiles. The final part of the tour takes us on a short climb to the Paço dos Duques de Bragança and Guimarães Castle, where we end the visit with one of the most impressive views of the city and Portugal's history.

“A very interesting tour, Pedro is great!”
We enjoyed this tour and although we already learned a bit about Portugal's history having travelled through the country - Pedro managed to give us some new insights, interesting facts and even some secrets from the history... Being in the cradle of the country helped that :) and Pedro is very well informed, one can see that he loves history, his country and is very good in communicating it. Adding a bit of humor in the story is also always a nice touch.
Definitely recommended if you have an hour and a half in Guimaraes!
