Things to do Free Tour of Guimarães
The proud birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first independent king of Portugal (born here in 1110, he later used the city to launch the main thrust of the Reconquista against the Moors), and, thus, the Portuguese kingdom, Guimarães has beautifully preserved its illustrious past. Its medieval center is a warren of labyrinthine lanes and picturesque plazas framed by 14th-century buildings, while on an adjacent hill stands a 1000-year-old castle and the massive palace built by the first Duke of Bragança in the 15th century. Guimarães superbness was recognized in 2001 when UNESCO declared its old center a World Heritage Site. In 2012, the city was the European Capital of Culture, which has given it a more creative edge. “A really enjoyable tour ”
I really enjoyed the tour my guide was fantastic, knowledgeable and fun with a very apparent love of the city. By the end of the tour I could appreciate why, what a fantastic example of a city valuing and keeping its history and heritage intact it was like walking through time. Apesar de o guia ter sido ótimo no conteúdo que partilhou, a visita programada para 2:30 teve a duração final de quase 3:30… das 15h30 às 19h…
De sublinhar que a visita que foi marcada pelo site ter sido publicitada e confirmada por email como em língua portuguesa, foi na verdade, em Espanhol. Informação essa que só obtivemos no momento do início da visita. O que claramente mexeu com a qualidade da experiência.

Ha estado fenomenal, Joao se sdaptó a nuestro horario y la edad de mis alumnos que eran 25 niños de once años en todo momento. Nos explicó todo muy bien y su español era muy bueno.
Lo malo es que ya habíamos pagado en la aplicación y no informaron al guía y pensó que nos íbamos con todo el morro sin darle nada. Él pasó apuro y yo más. Sugiero informar antes de que ya está pagado para evitar esto .

Our original tour was at 11am. Despite turning up early no guide appeared. I contacted Freetour and they very quickly arranged a tour with Joana at 12.30 on the same day.
Joana was excellent and great fun. She provided a lot of insights into Guimaraes, showing us things we would never have noticed, and taking us to places we would never have gone to.

“Walking in the rain”
Despite the bad, rainy weather, Carla did her best to make sure we had a good time in Gimaraes. She spiced up the historical sights with interesting stories, and in the end it was almost unnoticeable that it was raining almost all the time. She was a very nice and knowledgeable guide. Had a fantastic tour of Guimarães with João, who was knowledgeable and entertaining, and gave us lots of insights into the history and culture of the city - but above all, he really went above and beyond the call of duty. He continued the tour even after it had got dark and it would have been perfectly reasonable to stop, and after the tour had finished, he took the time to walk part of the way back with me, show me one more interesting site along the way, and explain the best route back to the station.
