Things to do Free Tour of Guimarães
The proud birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first independent king of Portugal (born here in 1110, he later used the city to launch the main thrust of the Reconquista against the Moors), and, thus, the Portuguese kingdom, Guimarães has beautifully preserved its illustrious past. Its medieval center is a warren of labyrinthine lanes and picturesque plazas framed by 14th-century buildings, while on an adjacent hill stands a 1000-year-old castle and the massive palace built by the first Duke of Bragança in the 15th century. Guimarães superbness was recognized in 2001 when UNESCO declared its old center a World Heritage Site. In 2012, the city was the European Capital of Culture, which has given it a more creative edge.

Really pleased with my tour. I was the only attendee and was grateful it wasn't cancelled like some other companies would do, especially as I arrived a few minutes late! I enjoyed the personalised tour and Joaquim's displayed passion. He was professional, had a lot of knowledge, could respond to my questions and offered to take pictures and shared some recommendations of additional things I could do since I was spending the day there from Porto. Would highly recommed doing this tour as Guimaraes is small so you have time to go into different attractions after if you feel.

Joanna was a fantastic guide, one of the best I ever had. She was luckily willing to take just two participants so we had a private tour with plenty of time to answer our many questions behind history and tourism. We really got tonkmowneach other and felt we were walking as friends not tourists. She took an interesting route and shared much good historical information and architectural details. She showed us special nooks and crannies we would never discover on our own. She directed me to inexpensive parking knowing that I will be coming by car and even walked me back to parking garage after the tour. Highly recommend.

We had a great tour with Joann today. She brought the city to life taking us to all important locations but more significantly sharing unique insights that serve as the detail back story of the city. Tour also included bakery treat highlights from baker, little known corners and doors that formed history. Joann pointed out personalized sites we might want to visit based on our interests and length of time in town. Would definitely recommend Joann for tours as she has a generous kind spirit and is passionate about educating visitors.

“A guide with full of knowledge and kindness”
Joana was more than an excellent tour guide. She was very informative about all the history of the city (all the interesting details) and also about how the city is living nowadays. She is also a genualy warm person (not like when you sometimes get a fake warm tour guide). Would recommend a 100%.
