I have had several free walking tours, and they all went beyond my expectations, but this one disappointed me to say the least. The tour guide took us to very few of the places mentioned in the description, and wasted a lot of time in unnenecessary (and not mentioned) cafes and bakeries. For instance, we did not go to St. Martin Church, Sintra City Hall, Park Liberdade, Piseos Waterfall, Atyntamiento, to name a few. His historical knowledge was quite fragmented, selective, and biased. He did not talk while walking from site to site even though we passed by several, and clearly significant, places. Despite the fact that the “Moors” (who were Arabs-Berber) left their inedible mark in the language, architecture, and art of the city, his mention of them was fleeting and superficial, and his disdain toward anything that belonged to that era appeared in his aversion to the word Islam which he described as “their religion.” I was disheartened by such an aversion that I hope does not stem from Islamophobic ideas. Needless to say, we are in a time where diversity, in history and culture, should be celebrated and acknowledged, not suppressed in favor for an outdated meta-narrative.
