A 3-hour walking tour to discover the soul of the Sassi of Matera. A journey through rupestrian districts, cave houses and rock-hewn churches, including the Church of Idris. Perfect conclusion with an authentic tasting of typical products.
This walking tour offers a complete itinerary of the Sassi of Matera, designed for those who want to really get to know the rock-cut city, without limiting themselves to just the viewpoints.
From the historic center, the walk gradually takes you to the rupestrian districts, where houses, churches and streets merge into a unique landscape. Passing through Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, the local guide tells how for centuries the Sassi have been a living place of community, work and spirituality.
The tour includes a visit to a typically furnished cave house, which provides insight into the real living conditions of families until the mid-20th century.
One of the highlights of the tour is the cave church of Santa Maria de Idris, carved into a large rocky outcrop above the Sasso Caveoso. In addition to its medieval frescoes, the church also had a strategic function of visual control over the Gravina, making this place a symbol of protection and identity for the city.
The tour ends with a small tasting of local products.
