The Timeless Thames: Discover London's River with a Local
Escape the tourist crowds and discover authentic London on this walking tour along the River Thames with a local. Discover hidden historical sites, charming riverside locations, and experience breathtaking views of the city.
Things to do The Timeless Thames: Discover London's River with a Local
Do you like to get off the beaten path and discover a city's hidden secrets? If so, then join me as we venture where few tourists go, into the neighbourhoods of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, and learn about London's famous River Thames.
Lasting around 2 hours, this tour starts at the south end of Tower Bridge and heads eastward, stopping at many historic sites that tell the story of the Thames. You will learn how the river allowed London to grow from a small trading outpost on the edge of the known world to one of the world's great metropolises.
You'll visit many places of historical interest, including the medieval ruins of King Edward III's riverside manor house and London's oldest police station. You'll also "meet" some of the area's most famous residents before finishing the tour at one of the oldest pubs on the river, and the launching point of one of history's most famous ships.
As well as visiting many fascinating local attractions away from the crowds of central London, you'll also enjoy stunning views over the River Thames as you learn about London's historic waterway.
As a local, I will share stories and local knowledge that even many Londoners don't know.

“friendly guide & interactive delivery explaining an area away fr”
I'd learnt about the Docklands area on a university trip in the 1990s during its renaissance of office and residential development. Alex explained the history of London generally and then this part of the riverbank up until that time. We weren't inundated with facts but stopped every so often to hear about how life had been for residents, traders in the area at different times. He explained why some of the modern buildings in the view back to the centre of London were unconventional shapes. Alex is passionate about the area where he grew up in and still lives in. He checked that people in the walking tour who were not native English speakers understood. The tour centres on the river Thames' influence - it would be a refreshing couple of hours away from the noise and summer heat of central London for tourists and Londoners.

“fantastic guide”
I really enjoyed the exploratory tour of a section of the Thames that I wouldn't have done on my own or by following the directions in the books. Alex was able to give us lots of interesting historical information and show us parts of London that are less traveled by most people but equally interesting. thank you so much

“Great tour”
We enjoyed this tour very much, you will see more rural/normal areas where ordinary London people live. It's not the super sightseeing stuff, but great history about the Thames/habour/history/workers conditions.

“See a different side to London!”
This was an excellent tour. Alex is from London and really knows the city well. We saw iconic spots along the Thames such as Tower Bridge, but also some unknown parts of London too, which I definitely wouldn't have known to go and see. Alex told stories about some of the local people that were quite moving (look out for the statue of the little girl!) I would definitely recommend doing this tour to learn about different parts of London.
