Ioannina Walking Free Tour: The Castle & Its Tales

Most castles are ruins. This one has doorbells — and they still get answered. Cobbled paths, walls rebuilt across centuries, mosques, and a lake that keeps the city's darkest legend. Two hours through the layers of Ioannina.

Things to do Ioannina Walking Free Tour: The Castle & Its Tales

Most castles in Greece are archaeological sites. Ioannina Castle is a neighbourhood — people still live inside the walls, and the old gate is somebody's way home. We start at the Clock Tower and walk down Averof Street, the old bazaar where Ioannina's silversmiths worked for generations. Then we pass through the Central Gate into the castle walls. Inside, we'll discover: · The inhabited quarter - cobbled lanes, courtyards, and daily life behind the ramparts. · Aslan Pasha Mosque in the north-eastern citadel. · Its Kale, the inner citadel: the Fethiye Mosque, Ali Pasha's tomb and the best view over Lake Pamvotis. We end at the lake, facing the island where the city meets the water.
