Santa Maria del Fiore is the third largest church in the world and one of the largest in Europe. The Duomo in Florence is world famous for Brunelleschi's incredible dome and its polychrome (white, green, red/pink) marble panels that cover the entire structure.
The Florence Cathedral was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, the same architect of the Santa Croce and Palazzo Vecchio, who began the project in 1294. After Arnolfo Di Cambio, many other architects contributed to the final appearance of the building, which was finished in 1436. Inside the Florence Cathedral are extraordinary works of art.
From the floors, delicately covered in multicolored marble, to the interior of the dome, covered with the precious frescoes of the Last Judgment by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari or the famous fresco Dante in front of the city of Florence by Domenico di Michelino.
Our local guides will show you the main panoramic view from Piazza del Duomo and will tell you interesting anecdotes about how this masterpiece was designed. In addition to the cathedral and Brunelleschi's avant-garde dome, you'll see Giotto's bell tower and visit the Museo del Duomo, home to the largest concentration of monumental Florentine sculpture in the world.
The collection includes medieval and Renaissance statues and reliefs in marble, bronze and silver. There are some masterpieces like Michelangelo's Bandini Pietà or Donatello's Mysterious Prophet.
