Things to do The Catastrophe of Smyrna Greeks Tour in Piraeus

In 1922, Greeks were forced to abandon their homes in Asia Minor and flee to Piraeus. Their adventure seems like an ancient Greek Tragedy. The tour explores how refugees of the Asia Minor Catastrophe survived in Piraeus in the first half of the 20th century. Most of them lived in dens built on ancient ruins or above the rails of trains; they were breadwinners and loved the Rebetiko. We stop to see deserted mansions, a deserted train station, a deserted neighborhood, and the iconic industrial park of Drapetsona. We eat traditional Greek "meze" (the Spanish word is "tapas") at a tavern, we listen to a rebetiko song on a notorius bridge. We stop to see the Municipal Theater of Piraeus, we visit the monument of Resistance at Nikaia, and the Resistance Museum in Nikaia.
