When it comes to great events like our Risorgimento, there is a risk that history becomes mythologized and that rhetoric and partisan propaganda simplify events and conflicts that are not easy to interpret. There is no doubt that the Risorgimento is a more complex phenomenon than what you read about in textbooks or see on monuments in the streets and squares: there is nothing new. It is well known that personalities managed the Risorgimento in strong contrast with each other; the time is ripe for us to look at those events with the eye of history that is not afraid to point out contradictions and reality and not that of rhetoric and propaganda. There is no problem with national identity because if you look at the conditions of the time, it was an extraordinary season. Despite all the defects, great historical figures had miraculous ability and luck. They made difficult decisions, mostly without making mistakes, with the courage to sacrifice their positions to reach a compromise when necessary. Not only history but also thoughts, words, and art.
