Dachau was the first Nazi Concentration Camp, built on the outskirts of Munich (Germany). It was opened on 22nd March 1933, just a few weeks after Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor.
More than 200.000 prisoners were held and tortured by the Nazis, of whom more than 40.000 were killed. The Dachau Concentration Camp was the penultimate camp to be liberated by US troops on 29th April 1945 with 32.000 survivors, making it the camp that remained open the longest.
