I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in learning about how the lived realities of the troubles and how the divide between the communities is reflected and built into the urban environment. Jess did a fantastic job in bringing all participants to the table, ensuring that regardless of background knowledge to the topic we could all take something from the information she provided. I especially enjoyed the little details such as the meaning and history of symbols used, the reactions of Belfast residents to the retouching of the Bobby Sans mural, and the overall thorough contextual history of the monuments and memorials we visited. Our guide also was open to any questions we had and provided a very open, casual and welcoming space of exchange for us to learn. Since we visited two residential neighbourhoods in West Belfast each representing one side of the conflict, I was initially worried to walk around there as a tourist group. The idea of overstepping private spaces or taking pictures in a residential areas made me uncomfortable. However, I felt that this whole walking route was organised in a very respectful manner and took care to keep a professional distance whilst providing a very intimate impression of the local perspectives.
