Things to do Free Walking Tour of Soweto Township

Explore the soul of Soweto on this guided walking tour that connects visitors with the township’s most iconic cultural and historical landmarks. The tour will begin at the iconic Soweto Theatre and will take us through the township’s rich cultural and historical landscape. Next, we proceed to the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village, where we will explore African mythology and symbolic art that reflect traditional beliefs. Afterwards, we will hop into a local minibus (taxi) and make our way to visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum to learn about the 1976 student uprising and the roots of Youth Day. From there, we explore Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have been home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners: Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. We will visit Mandela House and reflect on the legacy of South Africa’s first democratic president. That will conclude our tour for the day, which includes Vilakazi Street, where you can enjoy nice food, watch dancers from different cultures, and purchase hand-crafted accessories that reflect our cultural pride and identity. Together, we will walk through the heart of Soweto and connect with its living history.
