Sarajevo War Tour

The War Tour was undertaken by Said as guide and his brother Namik as driver for the afternoon. It was touch and go whether or not the tour would take place due to numbers at first, but Spirit Tours were extremely good at keeping me informed of numbers. Arriving 20 minutes early as I wanted to find the meeting point in advance; it is in a passageway, Google Maps not the positioning guide for this one; I was introduced to Said and his colleague, Melika. I was invited to have a pastry and cup of water and had a warm welcome. An interesting chat before we set off after a delay in traffic and a further invitation of coffee. Once out in the car with the rest of the party we travelled out to the Tunnel of Hope, passing several important positions including, the Pijacke Market, Sniper Alley and the Parliament on the way which Said gave with good knowledge. A video of around 20 minutes broadcast what occurred in the building of the tunnel, followed then by a walk into a new section of the tunnel, followed by the museum. From here we made our way high into the hills above the city to the Bobsleigh track of the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics and its significance in the events of the seige. Namik’s driving skills along these roads were perfect as the state of them were not the best driving into the mountain. The final stop was the Jewish cemetery followed by the closing of the tour passing the spot where the first two lives were lost in the Bosnian conflict. Hvala.
