We were fortunate enough to have been given an effectively private tour by Doci. Funnily enough we had already been in Ohrid a few days—which we mentioned to her—but felt that we needed a guide to better understand our surroundings and to help answer the never ending slew of questions we had. Though she seemed slightly worried that we’d seen most of Ohrid’s best sights, it took mere seconds before we were whisked down a beautifully historic lane we’d completely overlooked, shown truly remarkable demonstrations from local artisans (per her request), and told local legends and history that we’d completely overlooked or were unsure about. She was able to answer so many offbeat questions, took a truly personal interest in getting to know us and tell us about herself and her own story, and really help us to gain an appreciation for the continuing history of Ohrid and Macedonia.
The tour took us from the city center to some of the most beautiful and historic spots in the city, from the churches of Hagia Sophia, Virgin Mary, and St. Jovan to the ancient amphitheater—sights that were absolutely breathtaking in twilight. We definitely got some steps in, but the time truly passed before we knew it—and she is absolutely willing and happy to tailor each tour to her guests’ needs (we would’ve kept going if it hadn’t gotten so dark!).
I could keep writing my praises, but to make a long story short we couldn’t recommend this tour more. If you’re in Ohrid and are considering a walking tour, absolutely 1,000% look no further :)
