Things to do Discover Japanese Culture Through Shogi and Board Games
This 2.5-hour cultural experience begins at the iconic Peace Memorial Park, where we meet at the fountain and start our journey into the world of Japanese board games. We’ll hop on Hiroshima’s charming streetcar and enjoy a short ride through the city, while your local guide shares insights into Japan’s postwar board game culture.
Our destination is Shogi Café Marco, a cozy place where locals gather to play. You’ll step into a quiet tatami room, just like a professional Shogi match setting. With wooden pieces and a traditional board, you’ll learn how to play this mind game from the basic moves and respectful manners to deep strategy and cultural meaning. Fans, Japanese sweets, and even photo time are included!
You’ll then enjoy actual games against other guests or local players, with plenty of support and explanation from your guide. Optional mini-introductions to Othello and Go are also available. Whether you’re a beginner or curious traveler, this tour offers a deep dive into Japan’s thoughtful traditions, on and off the board. Join us and discover how much you can learn from a single move.
