Things to do Gjirokaster Free Walking Tour

Gjirokastër Free Walking Tour Join our 2-hour walking tour led by certified local guides and discover the magical stone city of Gjirokastër. During the walk, we’ll explore the most fascinating areas of the city, including the historic Bazaar and neighborhoods showcasing stunning Gjirokastra-style architecture. In the bazaar area we will visit also the Obelisc monument and the Mosque of the bazzar. We'll pass by the traditional streets of the city in the area where are located the most beautiful houses of Gjirokaster style, the famous 300 years old Skenduli Family House, the former home of dictator Enver Hoxha (Ethnographic Museum), and the birthplace of Albania’s most renowned writer, Ismail Kadare.We also walk through the castle surroundings and the tour ends near there but we don’t enter the castle itself, as there's an entrance fee. This way, you can decide whether to visit it on your own and spent as much time as you want there if you go. Along the way, we’ll stop at the best panoramic viewpoints where you’ll have the chance to enjoy and capture breathtaking views of the city as well. “Free walking tou Gjirokaster”

We hadden een geweldige ervaring met de free walking tour in Gjirokastër. De gids nam uitgebreid de tijd, vertelde met veel kennis en humor over de geschiedenis en verborgen plekjes van de stad. Hij stond open voor vragen, paste de wandeling aan het weer aan (we deden een langere route omdat het niet te warm was), en liet ons zelfs vrij kiezen of we het Skenduli House wilden bezoeken. Dankzij hem ontdekten we prachtige, unieke plekken die we zelf nooit gevonden zouden hebben. Een absolute aanrader!

It was also a great way to get to know the history of Albania which for me was important as it is my first time here and I'm keeping just a couple of days. My friend and I were looking for a tour to do in the late after noon because Gjirokaster is already too hot for walking under the sun. We checked in several webs and finally decided for this one. “It was okay”

We did the walking tour in the evening and giving the fact that in summer it can be really hot, I can totally recommend to do it in the evening. The guide was very friendly and helpful, he showed us both touristic and silent areas of Gjirokastra as well as tips for having dinner or a drink, but unfortunately there was less historical content than I expected. Maybe this can be considered for future tours, as some people may be more interested in the history of the town than in where to go eat afterwards.

“Great tour!”

We met with Eugene at the stairs in front of the Courthouse & from there he took us for a walk through different parts of the Old Town of Gjirokastra and provided us with all kinds of information - not just about the city's history, but also about life in Gjirokastra and Albania in general, about what else to see while we were there and on the way to our next destination... He showed us a lot of places we had missed on our serendipitous strolls around town before and it was astounding how ressourceful Eugene was - and his calm and relaxed way of communicating made listening to him a great pleasure! Our tour highlight was visiting the Church of Transfiguration - and following Eugene's advice, seeing two old Chinese cinematographs in the local cinema's foyer on the following day. Thanks a lot!!!

“Wonderful experience in Gjirokaster ”

Our guide was wonderful! Really enjoyed hearing more about Gjirokaster fascinating history and he was informative and entertaining. Usefull information, and well explained, we were from different countries and we all could understand what he was saying. At the end of the tour he asked again if the group needed any other info or help for Gjirokaster or Albania in general making sure all people to get info necessary for their trip. Would highly recommend at the start of your visit for anyone visiting Gjirokaster for the first time so after the tour to know better what to do for the rest of the time.

The tour was great! Our guide Eugene was extremely knowledgeable and took us to some very cool spots we wouldn't have discovered on our own. I loved the history and pop culture facts. At the end of the tour, we were given a list of recommended places (e.g. coffee shops and restaurants). These are spots recommended by locals so you know they are authentic. Eugene is a national guide so he can help with good info for all Albania, he was ready and so prepared for any question. I highly recommend this tour!

“Exellent Tour”

The free tour of Gjirokaster was an amazing experience! A very beautiful city full of history and multiple layers of architecture. The tour was made great by having an amazing tour guide who was very informative and very helpful, he even helped us with our plan for the rest of our trip in Albania. I highly recommend this tour! “Informative and relaxing tour through Gijrokaster”

We learnt a lot about Gijrokaster and the history of Albania in general on this tour. Eugen took a lot of time for us and answered all our questions. Gijrokaster is very beautiful, but you have to walk a few metres up and down on uneven ground. We can recommend the tour to anyone who is good on foot and interested in history.
