Bathed by the Mediterranean, the island has innumerable coves and impressive cliffs, as well as the Tramuntana mountains, famous for its fauna and flora, and its legendary towns. Mallorca is for us the jewel of the Mediterranean, where you can enjoy your trip whether you are looking for rest on the sun and the beach, or adventures and centuries-old traditions in the hands of its most typical towns.

Its capital, Palma de Mallorca, is its main attraction, where you will find medieval churches, palaces and fortresses with a lot of history, and a purely Mediterranean and delicious gastronomy. But, in addition, the island is full of charming places that you cannot miss, such as beaches, mountains, lighthouses, cliffs... The best option is to rent a car to be able to move comfortably, but you can also organize an itinerary to see the most impressive In a few days. Ready to enjoy?

These are the essential places to see and visit in Mallorca in 3 days (or a weekend getaway). Take note!

12 essential places to see and do in Mallorca

1. Its capital: Palma de Mallorca

The capital of Mallorca is full of monuments and history, and it was our first stop on the island. This city is the largest in the entire Balearic archipelago and has activities to enjoy at any time of the year.

In the city of Palma you will find places where it is really worth stopping. Some of them are to dedicate a separate space, such as its Gothic-style Cathedral, or the Bellver castle, which we will talk about below.

Walking through the city you will discover historical buildings with a lot of meaning behind them. For example, near the Cathedral you will find the Almudaina Royal Palace, a mixture of styles and cultures, which preserves its Muslim fortress façade, and which today is the official residence of the royal family during their visits to Palma.

Very close to this palace, you will find the S'Hort del Rei Gardens, one of the most beautiful in this city. We recommend them as a place to rest in the shade after a day of walking.

2. Boardwalk and Marina

Near the Cathedral and the Sea Park, is the promenade of Palma, on Gabriel Roca Avenue.

It is a busy place both for Mallorcans and visitors, as well as for athletes to run or ride a bike, as well as a good area to eat or have a drink.

Along the promenade you will arrive at the Port of Palma, one of the busiest in the archipelago, and which is a fishing, commercial, passenger and sports port.

The latter will surprise you by the number of recreational and competition boats that have mooring there. No wonder, since some of the most important regattas are held here, such as the Cup of King.

3. Cathedral of Palma

6038a5a63276f8d7d.jpeg

They had told us a lot about the Cathedral of Palma, but everything fell short when we finally saw it in person

The great temple is impressive, its height, its towers, its details and its location, near the beach and facing the Parque del Mar lake.

Also known as La Seu de Mallorca, the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Palma stands out for its Levantine Gothic style and is close to the bay of Palma. It is famous for its large Gothic rose window and its light and color show twice a year.

Architecture and interior of the Cathedral of Palma

Palma's cathedral is in the Levantine Gothic style, with style influences from northern Europe. The temple is 121 meters long and 55 meters wide. Its floors are designed in the typical Levantine style. This can be seen in the difference in height between the side naves and the central nave.

4. Bellver Castle

This impressive 14th century castle is located about three kilometers from the center of Palma, on a hill 100 meters above sea level, away from the urban area and surrounded by forests.

This fortress is one of the few with a circular plan that you will find in Europe, being the only one in Spain. We loved its central patio and its terrace, from which you will have impressive views.

This castle has a lot of history to tell, from its beginnings as a residence for kings, through a prison, until today when it has become the History Museum of the city of Palma.

It is easy to get to, both by bus (you have several lines available such as 4 and 20), or by car to the parking area enabled.

5. Tramuntana mountain range

One of the main charms of Mallorca is the Tramuntana mountains, for which we advise you to reserve at least one day.

Famous for its legends and traditions (which encompass the life and celebrations of the towns in the area) and the setting for movies and television spots, this place enchants with its charm and magic.

Whether you are a lover of nature and adventure, or if you are just looking for a relaxing time, the Tramuntana mountains offer you different options to choose how to spend your holidays. But one thing is clear: you cannot leave Mallorca without visiting it, staying in one of its towns and walking around it.

The mountain range, which is located in the northwest of the island, is declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Some of the towns that we liked the most in the area are Escorca, where you will find the wildest areas with old paths, and where the Lluc Sanctuary is located; Alaró, famous for its castle and its cliff; Bayanbufar and the impressive view of its terraced crops; and the Pollença area, a favorite place for artists and renowned personalities to enjoy Mallorca and its mountains.

6. Caves of Drach

6038a5a64b79dacc3.jpeg

When we went on an excursion to these caves we didn't think we were going to hallucinate that much, but we loved them! This place brings out your most adventurous and exploring side.

The Drach caves are located in Manacor, in the town of Porto Cristo. There are four interconnected caves that hide an impressive underground lake. Inside, in addition to guided tours, daily concerts are offered taking advantage of the charm and sound of the space.

When we entered we were amazed at how beautiful it is. You make the visit mounted in a boat and you discover the interior of the cave navigating through its waters.

You can get there by car in an hour from Palma, or take the 412 bus from Palma to the caves (it takes about an hour and a half).

    7. Cape Formentor

An experience that you cannot miss: visiting Cape Formentor, in the east of Mallorca.

It is located in the Pollença area, and it is a cape about 20 km long, crowned by a lighthouse. The landscape, with the sea as the protagonist, is totally romantic and the views are spectacular, we loved them. Without a doubt, you will find the most beautiful sunset in Mallorca there.

Formentor beach is also worth photographing, as its blue water and nearby forests make it a heavenly place. We take advantage of the first hours of the afternoon to bathe and then at dusk we go up to the lighthouse for the sunset.

    8. Dragonera island

At the opposite end of Cape Formentor we find a beautiful enclave for an excursion: Sa Dragonera Natural Park.

This island is located about 800 meters from the coast of Majorca and can be accessed by boat, like the ones that leave daily from San Telmo (it doesn't take us more than 15 minutes to cross to the island).

It is a great place for lovers of adventure and nature. We recommend that you go with comfortable clothing, water and sun protection.

Sargantanas, these small reptiles are native to the area.

    9. Beaches and coves of Mallorca

    6038a5dda537aeba0.jpeg

In the city of Palma itself you have very good beach options such as Can Pere Antoni and S'Arenal, the latter is one of the best known in the city, an area of extensive clear sand and always very lively with people. But if you want to discover a little more what the island of Mallorca can offer you, we recommend that you try one of its most hidden coves and beaches. We leave you a selection in case you go through any of them and want to take the opportunity to take a dip.

    • Formentor: on the cape of the same name, a beach surrounded by vegetation, which gives it the appearance of a true wild paradise.
    • Sa Calobra: located next to the Sierra de Tramuntana, its crystalline waters and its cliffs will leave you speechless. It is one of the beaches that we liked the most. Of course, we recommend you go with time to take a seat.
    • Camp de Mar: an extensive, family-friendly beach with fine white sand. It has a restaurant nearby and you can rent hammocks.
    • Caló des Moro: a small corner of crystal clear water, worthy of appearing in your best photos. As in Sa Calobra, we recommend going early in the morning to find a place.
    • Cove Tuent: it is located in the Sierra de Tramuntana and is characterized by its emerald green waters. It is not a good option to go with small children because of its stones, but it is a good option to enjoy a sunny and relaxing afternoon with your partner.
    • Alcudia: a large beach for the whole family, where you can enjoy water sports and restaurants.

    logo_eat.jpgWhere to eat in Mallorca?

The mediterranean gastronomy is very special in Mallorca, where we find products of great quality and flavor, where bread, sausages, rice and sweets play a leading role. We give you some recommendations to taste the typical foods of the area.

6 places to eat in Mallorca

    • Es Rebost: on Avenida Jaume III, in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, we found this local food restaurant that we had heard about and that we loved. Highly recommended for a stop and try a bit of everything with a good beer. If you are looking for a quick and easy snack, ask for a Mahón cheese llonget, or a couple of tortilla tapas with sobrassada and coca de trampó.
    • Forn de San Joan: by name it looks like a bakery, but it is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Palma de Mallorca. Due to its somewhat higher prices, we recommend it for a special moment, in case you want to give yourself a tribute during your vacation. We ate red shrimp gyozas, the marinated tuna tataki and the pear ravioli. Everything spectacular! Of course, remember to book before to ensure a table.
    • Can Ferra: if you visit the Puerto de Pollença area, we recommend this place that we found by chance and where we ate very well. We suggest you try the fried calamari and the grilled cuttlefish. They also make paellas and brut rice.
    • Es Verger: if you go through the inland area of the Sierra de Tramuntana in Alaró you will find Es Verger, a restaurant serving traditional Mallorcan food, where you will enjoy its rice dishes cooked over wood and its lamb shoulder with beer. We stopped there when we went on an excursion to see the castle of Alaró and its surroundings. We tried the lamb and the brut rice which was our favourite.
    • La Botana: very close to the Cathedral of Palmas you will find this well-known tapas bar. If you want to eat well and cheaply in Palma de Mallorca, we recommend that you go there and order a couple of hamburger tapas, their garlic prawns and their broken eggs. Very good everything!
    • Es Vergeret Restaurant: if you go to the Tramuntana coast area to enjoy the beaches of Tuent and Sa Calobra, we recommend you stop for lunch here, with beautiful views of the Tuent cove. We ordered the paella and the Mallorcan salad.

      6 typical dishes of Mallorca

      • Ensaimadas: without a doubt, the star snack of the trip. The ensaimadas are the most famous thing in Mallorca. In Palma you have some of the most frequented places with the longest tradition, such as Can Joan De S'Aigo in the Horno de Santo Cristo. You can find them in different flavors. We loved the sobrasada (an ingredient that is also a specialty of Mallorcan gastronomy).
      • Coca de trampó: this coca is traditional from Mallorca, adding a mixture of peppers, tomato and onion to the bread dough. You can find it in many bakeries and also as a tapa in many bars.Brut rice: a terrific rice, the likes of which we had never tasted before. It is a soupy rice, with spices, meat and vegetables. The seasonings can vary from one place to another and you can find it in many restaurants in Mallorca.
      • Tumbet: for vegetarians there is a delicious option: tumbet. We tried the dish, although the name didn't tell us much, but the truth is that we quite liked the mixture of fried aubergines, potatoes, tomato sauce and parsley. In some restaurants it is also served as a garnish for meat or fish.
      • Mallorcan style snails: possibly the best snails we have ever eaten. The snails are served with a spicy garlic, parsley and chilli sauce. You will want to repeat!
      • Cardenal de Lloseta: this dessert is the secret that we discovered on the way to Formentor, when we made a detour to make a stop in the town of Lloseta, where they are typical. Some residents of Mallorca recommended that if we passed through the town we should try them (although they can be found in many other Mallorcan pastry shops). We tried them in the town and we liked it so much that we ended up buying more for the road. It is a cake and meringue sweet. Delicious!

Athletes in the family? Without a doubt, an essential in your visit with children to Mallorca, is to go to the Rafa Nadal Sport Xperience Museum.

Learn about the history of our great Mallorcan tennis player, and the trophies he has won (there is an exhibition of all of them). You can also test your skills in tennis, rowing, Formula 1, cycling... in an experience room with a simulator. Who's in?

      Katmandu Park

      5e2Recurso13x.png

In Mallorca there is also a theme park: Katmandu Park. A place created for the little ones to have a great time. We found it in Magaluf and there you can enjoy attractions, slides, mini golf and 3D games. An adventure that children will not want to miss.

      Soller Train

      5e2Recurso13x.png

An experience that children and adults will like: traveling on a train that is more than a century old. You are going to love it!

The route goes from Palma to Sóller and you will feel transported back in time on its wooden benches, while you listen to the rattle of the train and admire the landscape.

      Boat tour

      5e2Recurso13x.png

For the most intrepid little ones, Mallorca offers a multitude of boat trips to meet dolphins, hidden caves, movie sunsets...

We recommend some of the most beautiful and entertaining routes, such as the one that skirts Cape Formentor departing from Puerto de Alcúdia, or an excursion to the island of Cabrera on a boat where you can see the fish on the seabed. A very interesting option to spend a fun day with the family and encourage respect and knowledge of nature.

      yoorney pets logo.pngPet-friendly Mallorca

Are you passionate about animals and looking for a different plan? A getaway with your pet is always a good idea. But surely you think, where can they enjoy to their heart's content?
Tourism and pet-friendly getaways have grown in Mallorca in recent years. More and more hotels, restaurants and attractions have hung the Pet Friendly sign on their doors. A getaway with your dog is one of the most unforgettable adventures you can have.
Malo is a very #petfriendly city and that is how we have experienced it. We have been able to do a lot of activities with our dogs!

      Beaches for dogs in Mallorca

Surely before traveling to Mallorca you are looking for plans where you can include your pet! One of them is being able to enjoy a dip with your best friend.
In Mallorca you will find many beaches that, during the winter, allow pets to bathe. At the moment there are only a few that allow it throughout the year, although most are made of rocks and not sand:
      • des Gats Cove (Costa de la Calma): small quiet beach, but it is almost all rocks.
      • Punta Marroig (Palmanova): it is a beach of rocks and stones and at the moment it does not have services such as showers and others.
      • White cove beach in Andraxt: it has no services and hardly any sand, almost all rocks.
      • Llenaire beach (one stretch) in Pollença: the stretch allowed for pets has services and is sandy, which is quite good.
      • Na Patana Beach (Santa Margalida): beautiful beach with fine sand and quite extensive, one of the best options to go with your pet.

Restaurants in Mallorca to go with dogs

One of the best known for its pet-friendly nature is El Perrito, a cafeteria in the Santa Catalina neighborhood. It's very small, but cozy, and their bagels are delicious. Another place is Cafe Riutort: a place in Palma that was recommended to us, specializing in delicious brunches and llongets, where your furry friends can accompany you.

Places in Mallorca to go with dogs

There are also some shops and shopping centers where your dog can enter, for example, the Porto Pi shopping center.
We were a bit surprised not to find dog parks in the downtown area. The ones that are best conditioned are found in surrounding neighborhoods, such as Parc Krekovic - Manuel Azaña and Parc de Sa Falda Verda, both of which have a large area for dogs, fountains and other services. Although there are many natural spaces to visit, the presence of dogs is not allowed in many places, as is the case of the Dragonera Island Natural Park, but on some routes in the Sierra de Tramuntana it is allowed to walk with our dog.

      Pet Friendly Hotels in Mallorca

This is one of the most important points when choosing a travel destination, there are more and more hotels that allow pets.

      Accessible Mallorca

Adapted tourism is not a pending issue in Mallorca.

We were able to experience it first hand and here are some of our favorite adapted and accessible sites:

      • Beaches: there are beaches that are conditioned for access by people with disabilities, such as Major Cove and Can Pere Antoni, both in the same city of Palma. It is true that when you leave the city, the beaches and coves that you find around the island are, in many cases, more natural areas that are not conditioned to be accessible.
      • Monuments: we find many monuments and places of interest in Palma that are adapted for people with special needs. The Bellver castle and the Cathedral are some examples of tourist places prepared to receive both people in wheelchairs and people with visual and/or hearing disabilities.

      yoorney party 2.pngNocturnal Mallorca

Enjoy the night life of Mallorca. The city hides a multitude of corners with a special charm to have a good time in good company and where you can walk, have a drink and toast.

These are some of our favorite places to party in Mallorca!

      Beer lovers in Mallorca

For lovers of good craft beer, we find some places where they serve it very well. We loved Lórien, a Palma pub with many national, international and artisan brands. Another place that we recommend you to try is the Tramuntana Brewery, also in the center of Palma, where you can also have a snack between beers and beers.

      Cocktails in Mallorca

To have a cocktail and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with friends, we advise you to take advantage of one of the terraces in the city of Palma, where the atmosphere is livelier. We were on the terrace of the Es Baluard Restaurant & Lounge. This terrace is located where the defensive wall used to be and from where you can enjoy exclusive views while you drink your favorite cocktail.

      Live music in Mallorca

One of the places we liked the most to listen to live music in Mallorca was the Blue Jazz Club, on the terrace of the Saratoga hotel, in Palma. Good live music while you enjoy the views from this impressive terrace.

      Mallorca nightclubs

Mallorca is full of clubs so if you want to party one night and dance, you will always have somewhere to go. One of the most famous nightclubs in Palma is Tito's, near the bay and with a unique atmosphere where you can hear the most famous DJs and artists that pass through the island. Good music and a luxurious atmosphere. Another well-known nightclub in the city is Nikki Beach, famous for its exclusive parties and exotic food.

How to get to Mallorca by plane
