Things to do Tana Royale: Between Power and Memories

Tana Royale: Entre Pouvoir et Mémoires is a tour guided by a student of History and Political Science, through three key places in Antananarivo. We begin at the Rova, cradle of royal Merina power, where we trace the origins of Analamanga, the arrival of Andrianjaka, the unification of Imerina by Andrianampoinimerina, and the opening up to Europe under Radama I. Then, at the Palais d'Andafiavaratra, residence of Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony, we explore the centralization of power, political reforms, and the balance between modernization and tradition at the end of the 19th century. Finally, at the Museum of Photography, we move from History to Memory. Period photographs reveal Antananarivo's social, urban, and political transformations. This place marks a return to the present, questioning our relationship with the past, with images, and with the city's evolution up to the present day. This tour offers a critical, sensitive, and lively reading of the Malagasy capital.
