Tallinn has changed dramatically in recent years and now is an amazing European capital. Our free tour will show the other side of the city, which is the Communist.

WHERE WE MEET: Niguliste 2, right in front of the Tallinn Tourist Information Centre. WHERE WE END: Linnahall DURATION: 2 hours (but we like to keep things relaxed). ABOUT THE TOUR: Experience Tallinn in a way most visitors never do. This friendly, story-driven walking tour goes beyond dates and textbook history to share real stories from locals who lived through the communist era. Some are surprising, others so strange they’ll make you laugh, but all bring the past vividly to life. Join us for a 2-hour guided walk in English through the Old Town and down to the vibrant harbor area. Along the way, you’ll discover what life was really like in Soviet-era Tallinn through personal stories, legends, and everyday experiences you won’t find in guidebooks.

“Really worth doing it”
The tour was really interesting. The guide knows very likely everything about this period and can explain it in a very vivid and engaging way so that it never gets boring or too much. He goes into interesting details, making life during this period more understandable and gives you a very good chronological overview at the beginning of the tour. I can only recommend it. Seeing Tallinn with the ordinary tour by Freetour should be a must, but it wouldn't really be complete without the 'communist stories' tour.

“Real stories mixed with history”
This was a great walking tour with not *too* much walking! It was led by a guide who brought lots of personal stories from his family in to demonstrate just how significant the Iron Curtain affected people during Soviet terror. We covered all the main places I think were relevant and we were walking for approx 2 hours but in lots of places where seating was available. I really found it informative and the guide was happy to answer extra questions. Very happy with this tour.

“Interesting and informative tour”
Really informative tour of Tallinn focusing on it's Communist past. The tour was in-depth and gave you more information that a city tour would, really interesting. Our guide was really engaging and it showed how he made the stories come alive with both interest and humour! We learned a lot on this tour and I would definitely recommend it if you are visiting Tallinn. The weather was very cold and the guide took this into account, taking us to places where there was a bit more sun so as to stay a little warmer. The ending was interesting as it was at the Linnahall and there were some great views of the harbour from this vantage point. My only one bit of feedback would be that there was a lot of snow an ice on the steps of the Linnahall which made climbing it very tricky (both up and down) as there were only small groves in the snow going up three flights of steep steps. I thought perhaps this could have been adapted by concluding the tour at the bottom and then offering to take people up if they wanted to to. But overall really great tour and would highly recommend.

I had an unexpectedly fun and memorable time on the Free Communist Tallinn Walking Tour! Our guide didn’t just bombard us with dates and dry facts—instead, we got a hilarious and honest look at what life was really like during the Soviet era, with stories that ranged from shocking to downright absurd (in the best way).
We wandered through the Old Town and the harbor area, stopping at places like the KGB HQ and “Sõprus” Cinema, while our guide kept everyone laughing with witty commentary and local legends. It was like getting a backstage pass to Tallinn’s weird and wild communist past, with plenty of chances to ask questions and share a laugh with fellow travelers.
If you want a tour that’s both eye-opening and entertaining, with a guide who knows how to keep things light and interactive, I highly recommend this one. You’ll leave with a new appreciation for Tallinn—and maybe a few stories that are almost too funny to believe!

He took us to buildings that were important during the Soviet time, explained the history of the occupation, sprinkling it with personal anecdotes about people he knew.

Top recommendation for visiting Tallinn! We did the “Tallinn in a Nutshell” tour with Kadri who was very friendly, informative and drew on her own experiences to give a personal touch to the tour. We enjoyed the tour so much that we then booked the “Communist Stories of Tallinn” tour with Christopher - he is a unique individual who graciously shared his profound family biographies that gave an eye-opening insight to life in soviet occupied Estonia. “Excellent And interesting tour”
Thoroughly enjoyed hearing about Communist history, good insight into past history. Our guide Jonas was enthusiastic and keen to answer all our questions. Well worth doing.
