Things to do Behind the Iron Curtain: Communist Stories of Tallinn

Experience Tallinn in a way most visitors never do. This free (donation-based) tour goes beyond dates and textbook history to share real stories from locals who lived through the communist era. Some of these stories are surprising, others are so strange they’ll make you laugh—but all of them bring the past vividly to life. In today’s political climate, understanding this chapter of history feels more relevant than ever. This tour offers not just insight into the past, but a deeper perspective on how it continues to shape the present. Join us for a 2-hour guided walk in English through the Old Town and down to the vibrant harbor area. Along the way, you’ll discover what life was really like in Soviet-era Tallinn through personal stories, legends, and everyday experiences you won’t find in guidebooks. At the end of the tour, if you enjoyed the experience, please don’t forget to support your guide with a donation. Contributions are welcome both in cash and by card, making it easy for everyone to show their appreciation.
